NEWARK, N.J. (OCT. 21, 2015)
– The Drew University women's soccer team (7-8-1) squared off with the Rutgers-Newark Scarlet Raiders (12-5-1) in non-conference action on the road tonight in Newark, N.J. Freshman
Caroline Kelly and senior
Melanie Santos netted the goals in a 2-1 victory.
In the 84th minute of a tied 1-1 game, following a take-down from behind on a breakaway inside the box, the Rangers were awarded a penalty kick. For the second consecutive game, Santos stepped up to the penalty spot in a high-pressure moment and buried the ball into the bottom right corner of the net giving the Rangers a 2-1 lead that would prove to be enough for the win. It was the senior captain's third goal of the season and second game-winner in as many games.
The Rangers and Scarlet Raptors have now clashed five times, including tonight's victory. Since the in-state rivalry began back in 2011 the Rangers lead the series advantage 4-1. Last season the Scarlet-Raptors picked up their first and only victory in the series with a 3-2 double-overtime victory.
Drew's first half was highlighted by Kelly who chipped the goalkeeper from 25 yards out to score her second goal of the season and put the Rangers up 1-0 in the 25th minute. Kelly's goal came from an assist by classmate
Meghan McDermott, who dropped off the ball for Kelly. The Rangers were able to fire four shots in the half, with Kelly's goal being the only able to find the net.
The Scarlet Raiders offense outshot the Rangers 5-4 in the first half and continued its attack in the second, tying the game 1-1, off a set piece in the 61st minute.
The Drew offense was able to get off seven shots in the second half with three finding their way on goal. Senior co-captain
Emma Campbell lead the Rangers in the second half taking three shots putting two on goal. Kelly also added three shots while scoring the game-winning goal.
Senior goalkeeper
Sara Nash made her ninth start of the season tonight in net for the Rangers. In 45 minutes of work in the first half Nash saved all three shots she faced taking her season tally to 40. Junior goalkeeper
Andee Higgins played the second half in net for Drew in the contest. Higgins made two saves on the three shots she faced in her 45 minutes of work, picking up the win in net and upping her record to 5-4.
Drew returns to the pitch on Saturday, Oct. 24 as they play host to Elizabethtown College at 3:30 p.m. in Ranger Stadium. The game is the second leg of a crucial Landmark Conference men's and women's double-header. The Rangers will pay tribute to the eight members of the 2016 graduating class before the game on Senior Day.
