MADISON, N.J. (Oct. 24, 2015) – On Saturday afternoon, the Rangers honored in a pregame ceremony the lone senior on the squad, defender
Daniel Giraldo, who provided some fireworks in his final regular season home game, which proved to be a 3-0 setback to No. 18 Elizabethtown College in a Landmark Conference match. The win was the 500th in the career of Elizabethtown (15-1-1) head coach Skip Roderick, who becomes the seventh coach to reach the milestone in Division III men's soccer, and just the 12th in all of the NCAA divisions.
The Blue Jays keep a stronghold on first place in the Landmark Conference with a perfect 7-0 record. The Rangers (11-4-2, 3-3-1) remain on the bubble of the Landmark playoff pictures. The top four teams clinch berths in the conference postseason tournament, and one game remains for Drew to solidify its spot on Saturday, Oct. 31 at Moravian College.
In the 51
st minute of his final home game, senior day honoree Giraldo provided a memorable moment. Elizabethtown was busy in dangerously close to the Ranger goalmouth. A long lead pass that culminated in a race to the ball between the Blue Jay striker and junior goalkeeper
John Marques, led Marques well off the goal line. The striker won and, with Marques drawn off his line, had a shot at the empty net. Streaking through a sea of blue, Giraldo slid at the line and flicked away the would-be goal. Another Blue Jay had a try, and Giraldo did it again, sprawling at the line to get a foot on the shot after having just recovered from the initial save. The defensive feat kept the score to just 2-0, Elizabethtown.
In the 16
th minute, the Rangers challenged the Blue Jay defense. Junior forward
Dylan Hammer troubled trying defenders and did well to protect the ball. He shook left, then right, looking for an opening. Breaking free was sophomore forward
Benjamin Audi, who took the touch pass from Hammer in stride, and put on a looping shot from just outside the box that looked destined for the top left corner of the net, but sat just high and over the crossbar.
The Rangers had another legitimate scoring opportunity in the 78
th minute. Junior midfielder
Cole Leckburg answered an Audi corner kick with a strong, lofting header that hit the crossbar. On the rebound, junior forward
Bass Etta-Ashu tried a header of his own, but the Blue Jay keeper smacked it away. The try was one of six shots on goals for Drew.
Elizabethtown made an effort to extend their 2-0 lead in the 18
th minute when it got a charging forward into the box with the ball, but a late, daring, and dangerous slide tackle from Giraldo thwarted the would-be try.
Elizabethtown drew first blood in the Senior Day celebration. Some generous passing just outside the 18-yard box created an opportunity for the Blue Jay striker. The pass was long and stayed on the ground as it approached the striker who booted a rocket that swept just inside the far post and in. Elizabethtown opened up a 1-0 lead in the fourth minute.
Just three minutes later a Blue Jay striker played a looping feed into a big ball that he chipped over Marques' head for the second goal of the game. The score stood at 2-0 Blue Jays in the eighth minute. Elizabethtown would score its third of the contest in the 88th minute.
The setback was the final home game for the Rangers and they enter a pivotal final contest with Moravian College. The Landmark Conference tilt is scheduled for a 1:00 p.m. start on Saturday, Oct. 31
