Bethlehem, Pa. (Oct. 31, 2015) – The Drew University men's soccer team concluded the 2015 regular season by erasing a 3-1 deficit in the second half to draw at Moravian College, 3-3, after double-overtime in the Landmark Conference finale.
Elsewhere in the Landmark Conference, The Catholic University of America was victorious in its finale, putting them in position for the fourth and final conference playoff spot. Drew had to win its finale to keep pace and leapfrog Catholic via the head-to-head tiebreaker. Due to the tie at Moravian, Drew finishes the season with 11 points, two back of Catholic's 13 for the fourth and final playoff berth.
Sophomore forward
Benjamin Audi scored twice in the game's final 22 minutes to help the Rangers (11-4-3, 3-3-2 Landmark) come back from trailing 3-1. Senior defender
Daniel Giraldo scored a penalty kick goal in his final Landmark Conference contest, cutting the Moravian lead in half at 2-1 just before halftime.
In game that saw a total of 55 shots, Moravian took 26 of those and put 14 on target and forced junior goalkeeper
John Marques to make a season and career-high 11 saves in the draw. Of Drew's 29 shots, junior forward
Bass Etta-Ashu took eight of them, prompting five saves from the Greyhounds (7-9-2, 2-4-2) goalkeeper. Audi took six shots, three on goal, and two in the back of the net for his ninth and 10
th goals of the season. The Drew sophomore finishes the regular season tied for second in the conference in goals scored and fifth in points (22).
After 38 minutes of scoreless soccer to begin what would turn into a must-win game for Drew, its opponent struck first and struck often. Moravian scored twice in the span of 1:48 to take a dangerous 2-0 lead. The Rangers, however, avoided taking the dreaded 2-0 deficit into halftime when a Greyhounds foul was called in the box, prompting Giraldo to take the PK and put Drew on the board. The senior scored his fourth career goal on Saturday.
It took the Greyhounds just 1:40 into the second half to jump ahead 3-1. Over the next 20 minutes, the Rangers managed just one shot on goal. But that's also when Audi took over. The sophomore striker scored twice within five minutes, the second of which coming off an assist by junior
Joe Sollod. The game was tied 3-3 with 15 to play.
During the final stretch, both keepers made two saves to keep it knotted up, forcing the fourth overtime game of the season for the Rangers. Drew outshot Moravian 6-3 in the 20 minutes of extra time, but both defenses held strong to keep the final score at 3-3 after double-overtime.
The Rangers have declared for an ECAC Championships bid and will await their seed and draw after the region's conference playoffs wrap up on Saturday, Nov. 7.
