Freshmen Lead Drew to ECAC Victory Over Brooklyn

MADISON, N.J. (Nov. 11, 2015) – On the strength of four freshmen goals, the No. 3 Drew University men's soccer team won the quarterfinals of the ECAC Division III Metro/Upstate championships, 4-0 over No. 6 Brooklyn College and has earned the right to advance to the semifinals.

Freshman goaltender Stephan Lukianov registered five saves and a shutout in his first career start. Drew featured four freshmen goals, highlighted by defender Niko Cserhat's first career goal. Midfielder Anthony McMyne, forward Alexi Velazquez and midfielder Guy Zeplovitch also contributed scores.

"It was great to get a playoff win tonight, especially with so many of our first years playing and contributing to a positive result," said head coach Lenny Armuth. "It's good for the program to have the underclassmen play so well in a meaningful playoff game. It set a good standard for us to continue in the tournament."

McMyne netted the game's first score. Audi played a long ball from Zeplovitch with his chest and bounced it to McMyne, who stood just on his left. He uncorked a rocket inside the far post to break the scoreless tie. Seven minutes had elapsed at the time of the score, McMyne's third of the year.

Five minutes later, Cserhat interrupted an attempted clear from the Brooklyn goalkeeper. He played the ball waist-high and laced his first career goal past the diving keeper to extend the lead to 2-0.

The Rangers needed just under two minutes to log the first goal of the second half and their third of the game. Velazquez controlled a ball from just outside the penalty box and sent on a strong, steady shot that wound up in the top left corner of the net.

In the 54th minute, Zeplovitch buried a rebound from an Audi shot for his second goal of the year.

The win has Drew visiting Galloway, N.J. to take on the winner of the Rutgers-Newark, Centenary game that takes place at 8:00 p.m. tonight.
