MADISON, N.J. (Oct. 27, 2015) – Two gorgeous goals by seniors
Alexa Kogan and
Emma Campbell in their final game at Ranger Stadium made the difference in a 2-0 victory for the Drew University women's soccer team against FDU-Florham in the Battle of Madison Avenue on Tuesday evening at Ranger Stadium.
The Rangers (8-9-1) take a 15-5-1 lead in the rivalry series that dates back to 1994 and have now won five straight over the Devils (8-9-2). Senior
Sara Nash picked up the win in net with a scoreless second half and two saves, splitting the shutout with junior
Andee Higgins, who made three stops in the first half.
Kogan, primarily a shutdown defender for the Rangers, scored just her second career goal to break a scoreless tie in the 69
th minute. The senior took back-to-back shots, the second of which was fired after getting her own rebound from 25 yards out from goal. The second shot arched over the Devils' defense and goalkeeper just under the crossbar for the 1-0 lead.
Campbell added some insurance in the 81
st minute after some brilliant teamwork on a set play from the corner. Sophomore
Katie Weber whipped in the cross toward senior
Melanie Santos, who flicked the ball beyond the six-yard box. Campbell was waiting to collect and quickly booted a shot to the right side netting to give Drew the 2-0 advantage with under 10 minutes to play. The tally snapped a five-game scoreless streak for Campbell, the Rangers' leading scorer in 2015.
The rivals went into halftime scoreless, due in large part to a fantastic defensive play by senior
Shannon Slowey. The co-captain, who has shifted back to defense from her normal midfield position due to recent injuries, found herself defending a post during a Devils corner kick. A strong header was guided to that post, but Slowey stood her ground to deny the would-be goal scoring chance.
The Rangers generally raised the intensity in the second half. After going into half scoreless and tied with four shots apiece, Drew outshot the Devils 8-4 over the final 45 minutes.
The Rangers were tuning up for what will be the biggest game of the regular season on Saturday. Drew will need a win to clinch a Landmark Conference playoff berth when they visit Moravian College at 3:30 p.m. in Bethlehem, Pa.
