SELINSGROVE, Pa. (Oct. 3, 2015) – The Drew University men's soccer team and Susquehanna University matched wits in nearly every fashion in a double-overtime scoreless draw on Saturday afternoon in Landmark Conference action.
Junior goalkeeper
John Marques made seven saves, including one with three seconds left in the contest to keep the sheet clean. After 110 minutes of scoreless soccer, Marques and the Drew defense record its seventh shutout of the season as the Rangers' record moves to 8-1-2 and 1-0-1 in the Landmark.
The Crusaders (6-3-2, 1-0-2) played the final 64 minutes with 10 men after a player received a red card in the 46
th minute. From that point, the Rangers outshot Susquehanna 12-10, and held an overall 17-16 edge in shots on Saturday. Drew took just one shot in overtime, a strike by sophomore
Lu Goncalves that needed saving by Crusader keeper
Augusto Lima, who posted six saves in the draw.
Junior midfielder
Dylan Hammer led the offensive charge with four shots, one of which was on target, while freshmen
Alexi Velazquez and
Zach Lipshitz each fired three shots in the scoreless tie.
The Rangers turned up the pressure with 28 minutes showing on the clock in the first half. Back-to-back corner kicks turned into shots on goal by Velazquez and Lipshitz, requiring saves by Lima.
Second half action saw junior
Bass Etta-Ashu miss a header just high of the cross bar after a corner kick by Lipshitz. Drew took eight corners on Saturday compared to Susquehanna's seven. Hammer presented Drew with perhaps its most dangerous chance with just six seconds remaining in regulation time when his shot struck the goal post, just missing an almost-certain walk off victory.
The scoreless draw is the second for the Rangers this season with the first coming at home against Muhlenberg College on Sept. 16.
Drew returns to Ranger Stadium for a Landmark Conference match under the lights on Wednesday, Oct. 7 at 7:00 p.m. against The University of Scranton.
