Etta-Ashu Scores in Rangers' 2-1 Loss to Scranton

MADISON, N.J. (Oct. 7, 2015) – The Drew University men's soccer team suffered its first conference loss on Wednesday night when it fell to The University of Scranton, 2-1, at Ranger Stadium.

In the 25th minute, Drew (8-2-2, 1-1-1) responded to Scranton's early goal and netted the equalizer. Junior midfielder Cole Leckburg met an airborne free kick in the box and flicked a header the opposite way. Streaking parallel to the goal line was junior forward Bass Etta-Ashu who leapt to meet the header. He flipped it on net with the side of his foot in mid-air and past the lunging goalkeeper for his second goal of the season. The score stood at 1-1 with 20 minutes to play.

Scranton (6-3-1, 2-0-1) started the scoring in the 14th minute when they arranged for a corner kick. The attempt at first appeared too high, as it soared over most of the crowd in the box. The ball tipped off a Ranger's head and settled at the foot of a Royal. The attacker slipped the ball between Marques and the post, using the crowded field that blinded the keeper to his advantage.

The Royals exploded out of the gate in the second half. Just 10 minutes in they sent in a shot that slammed off the crossbar, and then over it, when the striker came flying in, sending a header too high. Three minutes later, the Royals returned to the offensive zone. The striker came streaking down the pitch. He looped around the penalty box, and then cut into it, all the while balancing a defender on his hip and the ball on his foot. He put on a tricky shot that curled around his man and the post, granting Scranton a 2-1 lead with 32 minutes remaining.

The Royals' lead would hold till the end of the tilt.

The Rangers travel to our nation's capital for their fourth Landmark Conference game with The Catholic University of America. The contest is scheduled for a 1:00 p.m. start on Saturday, Oct. 10.
