Campbell's Golden Goal Gives Drew 2-1 Win at SU

SELINSGROVE, Pa. (Oct. 3, 2015) – With just 1:13 left in the second and final overtime period, senior forward Emma Campbell blasted home the Golden Goal to give the Drew University women's soccer team a 2-1 victory on the road at Susquehanna University in Landmark Conference play.

It was Campbell's second goal of the game and sixth of the season. Despite getting outshot 11-2 during regulation, the Rangers (4-6-1, 1-1 Landmark) were able to force overtime thanks to Campbell's strike in the 67th minute, which was the product of a brilliant through pass from sophomore Thalia Santacruz. It was a whole different story in extra time, where Drew outshot the Crusaders (5-4-2, 0-2) by a count of 4-0 leading up to Campbell's heroics.

"What happened today was purely a result of the team's determination to go home with the win," said head coach Christa Racine. "The effort and the hustle were there. In a conference game on the road on a cold day, the team has to realize particularly that it's 'go time,' and dig down for a little extra. That's what they did today."

Campbell's overtime game-winner was also the result of more sharp passing from the Rangers. Junior Sam McFarlane served a ball over the top of the Susquehanna defense, allowing Campbell to run onto the ball, beat a defender, and send the Rangers home happy with a powerful shot past the keeper. It was the senior striker's 44th goal of her career, which coupled with 11 career assists, gives her 99 points during her career in the Forest.

Susquehanna had taken a 1-0 lead in the 60th minute. The 0-0 tie score at halftime was due in part to the play of senior goalkeeper Sara Nash, who made three saves in her 45 minutes of play. Junior Andee Higgins minded the net for the final 64 minutes, made one save, and earned the victory.

Campbell was strikingly efficient with her offense on Saturday, scoring two goals on as many shots. In fact, the Rangers made an overall limited attack count after recording just five shots on goal in the conference win. Sophomore forward Katie Weber put both of her shots on target, while senior defender Alexa Kogan also took a shot that needed saving.

The extra periods were all Drew as Weber and senior midfielder Shannon Slowey each fired shots in the first overtime. Weber had another shot on target in the second overtime before Campbell's Golden Goal, as the Drew defense and midfield worked hard to not allow a single shot by Susquehanna during overtime. Meanwhile, Drew also set up two corner kicks in OT.

Drew was forced to survive a furious flurry of shots in the final 10 seconds of regulation time. An initial shot careened off the crossbar and back into play on the foot of another Crusader attacker. The follow up was blocked, but still not out of danger, and the final strike sailed high of the net just before the whistle.

The Rangers continue a four-game stint away from Madison on Tuesday, Oct. 6 at 7:00 p.m. at William Paterson University.
