Five Rangers in Double Digits in Loss at Stevens

HOBOKEN, N.J. (Nov. 21, 2015) – The Drew University men's basketball team dropped its first road game of the season in a high-scoring shootout at Stevens Institute of Technology on Saturday afternoon that ended 118-100 in the Ducks' favor.

Sophomore guard Yonathan Napoleon showed a triple feature in career highs with 26 points, nine assists and six rebounds to lead the Rangers (1-2) in the non-conference contest. Senior guard Kevin Herring II also boasted a well-rounded stat line with 21 points (5-of-10 three-pointers), eight assists and seven rebounds. Freshman forward Nate Aldrich notched his first career double-double with 13 points and 12 rebounds, eight of which came on the offensive glass, while sophomore forwards Jonathan Allegrezza (11 points) and Blaine Taylor (10 points) rounded out five Rangers in double figures.

Stevens (3-1) was wildly efficient from all points of the floor in the victory in their first game against Drew since the 2008-09 season. The Ducks shot 56% from the floor overall, along with a 68% mark from three-point range (21-of-31) and 88% from the free throw line (15-of-17).

Despite the loss, the Drew offense on Saturday was one of the most proficient in program history. The 100 points were the most points scored in a loss, while the team's 14 three-pointers are tied for sixth and the 23 assists are tied for seventh for a single game.

The Ducks had the upper hand early as the home squad stormed out to a 12-4 lead over the first five minutes. The high-scoring theme took root as both sides traded three-pointers, with Napoleon and McLaughlin sinking long range buckets for Drew. The Rangers turned it into a run as McLaughlin hit another to cut the Stevens lead to 15-13 with 13:44 to play in the half.

Herring started his assault on the Ducks' bucket with a layup to make it 18-15 a few possessions later. He would go on to hit his first of five 3-pointers at the 11:54 mark, which was followed by a Napoleon triple to tie the game at 23-23. Herring made it a 9-0 run two possessions later, hitting another three for Drew's first lead of the afternoon at 26-23.

Three minutes later, Drew put together a 7-0 run capped by yet another Herring trey. Up 36-30 with 7:36 left in the half, the Ducks answered to make the lead just one. Drew had its own answer with yet another 7-0 scoring run, this one sparked by back-to-back layups from Allegrezza to put the Rangers up 43-35 with 4:41 left.

The two heavyweights traded more punches, but Drew would enjoy its largest lead of the game at 49-41 off Herring's fifth 3-pointer of the half. However, the Rangers missed three of their last four shots over the final 2:30 of the half while the Ducks closed the period on an 8-2 run to set the halftime score at 53-51 in favor of Drew.

The Ducks were the only team to continue the torrid pace set in the first half. Drew kept it close for the first two minutes, but its final lead of the day would be at 57-56 at 18:23 in the second half. From there, a 10-2 Stevens run and lights out shooting from the Ducks methodically built up a 66-59 lead.

Napoleon hit back-to-back triples around the 15:00 mark to cut the deficit to 66-64, but that would be as close as Drew would get for the rest of the evening. A 13-0 run and a 6-0 run sandwiched a Dan Roibal layup for Drew as Stevens took control of the game on its home court. The lead hovered around 20 over the final 10 minutes of the game as Napoleon and Aldrich finished the game strong with their best games in their young careers.

Sparked by Alrich's eight offensive rebounds, Drew outscored Stevens on second chance points, 28-13. The Rangers also won the battle in the paint, 38-32, but could not overcome Stevens' lights out shooting.

The Rangers return to action on Tuesday, Nov. 24 at 7:00 p.m. against King's College, beginning a five-game home stand in Baldwin Gymnasium. The game will also be live on the Drew Sports Network with play-by-play commentary, live statistics, scoreboard and game clock.
