BETHLEHEM, P.A. (Feb. 11 2015) – After being kick started by a dominant first half from junior guard
Kevin Herring II, the Drew University men's basketball team defeated Moravian College on the road by a score of 85-80 on Saturday evening.
Â
Herring dropped 31 points (9-of-12 three-pointers) on the night, his highest output  as a Ranger. Junior forward
Jason Huelbig notched his fourth career double-double with 13 points and 11 rebounds. Huelbig has logged three double-doubles this year. Junior guard
Mike Klinger pitched in 15 in the victory.
Â
With nine three-pointers, Herring has etched his name in Rangers history and enters the record book second all time in three-pointers made in a game.
Â
The Rangers (11-12, 6-8) opened in Bethlehem set to live and die by the three-pointer and for the first 10 minutes of the contest, Herring lived large. He was a robot from downtown, draining his first five baskets, all of them treys. Fifteen points later and Drew was hoisted to a 24-13 lead over Moravian (4-18, 2-11) with 10 minutes to go in the half.
Â
Herring wouldn't stop. He continued to drain deep-range buckets. He coasted into the half with 26 points and at one point, had hit eight consecutive threes in as many attempts.
Â
Moravian wouldn't go away, though. Despite Herring's output the Greyhounds outshot the Rangers from deep. They put up a 60-percent figure to Drew's 56-percent. In addition to outside success, Moravian also contributed deep-range two-pointers to keep the score close.
Â
The Rangers entered halftime holding a slim 43-42 lead.
Â
Drew opened the half on a 15-2 run that turned a temporary Moravian lead into a decisive one for the Rangers. Huelbig and Klinger traded baskets for the opening 10 minutes of the half.
Â
An 8-0 Moravian run trimmed down the Rangers' lead and the contest would eventually tie at 71-71 with six minutes to go. The teams would exchange 1-point leads until a kick out to Herring, who had been guarded tightly in the half, resulted in yet another three-pointer. The trey gave Drew an 81-78 lead that would hold up until the final buzzer. The Greyhounds resorted to the intentional foul, and Klinger and Huelbig combined on 4-of-4 from the charity stripe to ice the contest.
Â
The Rangers return home to close out the season with two games. The first will take place against Susquehanna University on Saturday, Feb. 14 at 4:00 p.m. in Baldwin Gymnasium, where Drew will celebrate four Rangers on Senior Day.
