Taylor Drops Career-High as Drew Falls to Catholic

WASHINGTON (Feb. 07, 2015) – In a game that saw freshman forward Blaine Taylor's best scoring output as a Ranger in his first career start, Drew dropped a conference contest to No. 23 The Catholic University of America by a score of 82-57 at the DuFord Center on Saturday evening.

Taylor notched a career-high 13 points on four of six shooting and snagged six rebounds in his start. Junior guard Mike Klinger added 14 points and five rebounds. Junior guard Kevin Herring II rounded out the scoring with eight points of his own.

Full perimeter ball swings and ruthless basket attacks highlighted a 13-2 Catholic (19-3, 13-0) run to open the contest. The Rangers' two came from Taylor who earned a start for the first time in his career and took on the position of power forward. The Rangers worked the ball around the paint, skipping it over Catholic hands before it eventually nestled itself in Taylor's. Taylor turned and dropped in an easy bank shot from close-range for his first two points.

Early on, Drew's (10-12, 5-7) attack was different than usual. They wore down the Cardinals' post defense by using their smaller guards. Herring tried an off balance shot off the glass and after the ball tipped the front of the rim, and Herring regained his footing, he scrambled and put it right back up for two.

Catholic, which averages a positive point differential in the double-digits this year, had built up a 25-15 lead with 10 minutes to go. Seemingly every point Drew collected took more work than usual. Meanwhile Catholic was hoisting up deep transition threes that would be considered questionable decisions had they not gone in.

The Cardinals pestered the Drew big men with persistent and rabid post defense. With arms and legs flailing, the Cards prevented Drew from making a dent in what had ballooned to a 20-point lead with two minutes to go. Klinger buried a fade away three from the corner to trim the deficit to 17. The three ignited a 7-0 run but Catholic's insistent three-point shooting continually stymied the Rangers.

Catholic entered the half leading 47-31.

Catholic's constant stream of accurate passes seemed to disorient Drew at times. The Cards were shooting three-pointers at a 62-percent clip and had just tidied up a 12-2 run when the Rangers called timeout. Klinger buried another corner three out of the break and the Cardinal lead stood at 59-36 with 15 minutes to play.

The Cardinals continued to build on an insurmountable lead as the contest wound to a close.

The Rangers will play their final road game against Moravian College in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania before returning home for two more. The tilt is scheduled for a 7:00 p.m. tip on Wednesday, Feb. 11.
