ELIZABETHTOWN, Pa. (April 18, 2015) – The Drew University baseball team earned a lopsided doubleheader split at Elizabethtown College in Landmark Conference action on Saturday, dropping the first game of the twin bill, 6-1, before rebounding with a 23-hit effort en route to a 14-1 rout in Game 2.
Â
After a full day of Landmark Conference doubleheaders, the Rangers (11-19, 9-8) still find themselves in a playoff position as their conference mark is tied with The Catholic University of America and Susquehanna University for fourth place. Drew holds the tiebreakers over both teams by winning the season series (3-0 vs. Catholic and 2-1 vs. Susquehanna).
Â
Junior first baseman
Bobby Miskura and sophomore catcher
Mike Miraglia each had five hits over the doubleheader, with Miraglia going 4-for-4, including his first career home run, with five RBIs in Game 2. Sophomore starting pitcher
Tommy Broyles was the benefactor of the offensive onslaught, but took care of his own business on the mound, going the distance and allowing one run on five hits and three walks, while striking out seven Blue Jays (21-11, 11-6).
Â
Nine different Rangers recorded a hit in Game 2, with seven of those getting multiple hits. Seven different players notched an RBI in the victory, which featured a season-high run output.
Â
The 23 hits were the most in a game since March 28, 2012 at Centenary (N.J.) College. Additionally, the hit total is tied for fifth in the Rangers' record books for most hits in a single game.
Â
Drew Can't Hold Early Lead as E-Town Takes Game 1The Rangers received a third-inning run to take the contest's first lead, 1-0, in support of sophomore starting pitcher
Patrick Boyle. However, six unanswered runs by the Blue Jays thwarted Drew's attempt at getting an early leg up in the series.
Â
Three consecutive two-out singles produced the Ranger run in the third. Sophomore third baseman
Jonathan Rodrigues sparked the rally with a rope to right-center, followed by a hard-hit single to left by senior center fielder
Al Krause. Miskura put Drew ahead 1-0 on his RBI single to plate Rodrigues.
Â
Elizabethtown took the upper hand in the fourth inning as the Blue Jay manufactured two runs on a walk, a hit, a sacrifice, and a two-run single to take a 2-1 lead. Boyle halted the charge by painting the corner and getting the strikeout to end the frame.
Â
Staked with his first lead of the game, Blue Jays starting pitcher Kristopher Davis buckled down and stifled the Rangers' bats. Meanwhile, the Elizabethtown offense added a run in the fifth and three more in the sixth, providing plenty of cushion down the stretch.
Â
Davis improved to 6-0 this season after going the distance with eight hits allowed, no walks and four strikeouts.
Â
Offensive Explosion Leads to 14-1 Victory in Game 2Junior second baseman
Anthony Feltre drove in three runs and freshman outfielder
Ryan Sabbag went 3-for-5 with two RBIs to compliment Miraglia's 4-for-4, five RBI performance. Rodrigues crossed the plate three times after going 3-for-4, while Miskura also scored three runs with a 4-for-5 mark at the plate. Sophomore
Mike DiDonato batted 3-for-4 with a run scored and an RBI.
Â
The Rangers scored early and often in support of Broyles. Drew scored two in the first when Feltre was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded and Miraglia began his wildly productive game by singling home senior
Al Krause. Elizabethtown would get its only run against Broyles in the bottom of the first.
Â
Senior
J.C. Rasic picked up an RBI on a fielder's choice in the third, and Sabbag followed with an RBI double in the third inning. DiDonato made it 5-1 with his RBI single before the third was through.
Â
Miraglia launched his first collegiate home run in the fourth, a two-run shot scoring Miskura for the 8-1 Drew lead.
Â
The Rangers piled on in the fifth with RBIs from Feltre, Miraglia, and Sabbag. Miraglia was not done, however, adding a sacrifice fly in the sixth for the 13-1 advantage. Krause capped the scoring with an RBI single to plate senior
Michael Scarzafava, who singled earlier in the inning, to set the final score at 14-1.
Â
The Rangers conclude their three-game series at Elizabethtown on Sunday at noon.
