KINGS POINT, N.Y. (April 18, 2015) – Sophomore goalkeeper
Teddy Sweeney made a career-high 18 saves in a tight Landmark Conference battle at The United States Merchant Marine Academy on Saturday, but the Drew University men's lacrosse team was edged late for a 7-5 setback.
Five different Rangers scored in the league matchup. Sophomore defender
Michael Lloyd scored his third goal in the last four game and added an assist, his sixth of the spring. Lloyd also scooped a team-high six ground balls. Sweeney's 18 stops enter the Ranger record book tied for eighth most in a single game in Drew history.
The Mariners (5-7, 2-4) jumped ahead early with two markers in the first five minutes of the contest. Sweeney went to work in the second quarter, recording two of his career-high 18 saves, and keeping the Mariners off the board. The first-half shutout was avoided as freshman
Charles Maynard scored his third goal of the season on a nice pass from Lloyd 45 seconds into the second quarter. Maynard's tally was sandwiched in between two different two-goal runs for USMMA and the Rangers went into halftime trailing 4-1.
A familiar theme took root at Kings Point on Saturday. After a quiet first half on the offensive front for Drew, the Rangers continued the season-long trend of dominating the third quarter. Heading into the conference battle, the third quarter has produced the best marks for Drew with 27 goals scored and 25 goals allowed throughout 2015.
The Rangers netted four consecutive goals to take a 5-4 lead in the third, and allowed a Mariners goal before the end of the period to set up a 5-5 draw heading to the fateful fourth quarter.

Hutch Fisher at the 12:51 mark of the third quarter. Just 45 seconds later, freshman attacker
Harry Rice netted his 25
th goal of the season to cut the Mariner lead to 4-3.
Sweeney made a couple of saves in between Drew goals, as Fisher struck the back of the net on a blast to make it 4-4. The Rangers came all the way back, but were not yet done with their third-quarter charge. Drew took its first lead of the game with 3:12 remaining in the third on Lloyd's goal, which followed a ground ball pickup and a personal clear by the Drew sophomore.
The Mariners halted the furious Drew run with a tally to tie the game at 5-5 with 2:29 left in the third. Sweeney made six saves in the period.
The Drew goalie continued his hot streak in the fourth as both teams held the stalemate eight minutes into the final period. It was Merchant Marine that broke through for the critical goal with six minutes remaining, and the Mariners shored up the defense and added an insurance goal in the final minute of play to secure the Landmark victory.
Both sides were effective on the man-down defense and all seven combined man-up opportunities were unsuccessful with Drew going 0-for-4 and USMMA 0-for-3.
The Rangers wrap up the 2015 season on Saturday, April 25 on Senior Day at Ranger Stadium against Elizabethtown College with game time scheduled for 1:00 p.m.
