MADISON, N.J. (April 7, 2015) – Despite receiving goals from some young contributors, the Drew University men's lacrosse team fell to Vassar College, 15-6, on a rain-soaked Tuesday evening at Ranger Stadium in the 2015 non-conference finale.
Through the wet and slippery conditions, the Rangers offensive attack began neatly. Halfway through the first quarter, freshman attacker
Harry Rice high-stepped his way behind the crease, rolling to find his teammates in the middle. Twice he looked the way of senior midfielder
Hutch Fisher; once he shot hard but sent it high. The next time Fisher found himself in the slot and converted the try.
Drew went ahead 1-0 with nine minutes to play in the quarter, but Vassar stormed back, netting five unanswered conversions to close out the period.
Vassar would go on to make it seven consecutive goals before Drew interrupted the streak. Freshman attacker
Devin Lyons danced into the slot, protecting the ball as he approached the net. He finished by slinging one past the Vassar keeper. The score was Lyons's third of his career. It also narrowed the deficit to 7-2 with six minutes to play in the half.
The Brewers would add one more and set the halftime score at 8-2.
The Rangers struck first in the third quarter when freshman midfielder
Arty Warden uncorked a blast from 10 yards out to notch his first career goal with just under 14 minutes to play in the third. Warden's goal made it 8-3 Vassar.
The Brewers responded with three more goals, bringing the score to 11-3 by the beginning of the fourth quarter.
The Rangers answered two Vassar goals with quick back-to-back conversions. First, Rice, in a sprint for the net, caught a pass from junior
Steven Cola and went behind the back for a spectacular goal to extend his team-leading total to 22. Just 10 seconds later, freshman attacker
Charles Maynard netted his first career goal with a rip from 10 yards out. The scores made it 13-5 with seven minutes to play.
The teams then traded goals with Rice netting his second of the contest with two minutes left.
The loss marked the final time Drew will play non-conference lacrosse this season and will embark on a two-game road stint featuring games with The Catholic University of America and The U.S. Merchant Marine Academy. Drew's final game of the season is set for Saturday, April 25 against Elizabethtown College at 1:00 p.m. at Ranger Stadium on Senior Day.
