MADISON, N.J. (Sept. 16, 2015) – A resurgent Ranger second-half comeback fell just shy as the Ramapo College Roadrunners held on to a 3-2 lead to down the Drew women's soccer team in non-conference action on Wednesday afternoon.
Senior forward
Emma Campbell scored her second goal of the year and freshman midfielder
Caroline Kelly pitched in her first collegiate goal during Drew's second-half comeback attempt. Senior goaltender
Sara Nash contributed a scoreless second half effort in net with three saves.
Down 3-0, and nearing halftime, Drew (2-4) refused to go into the half scoreless, as junior defender
Danielle Millick came streaking down the sideline past a defender in the 43
rd minute. She continued on until she approached the baseline, at which point she cut in, towards Kelly
. Kelly popped one past the goalie for the Rangers' first goal of the day and Kelly's first of her collegiate career. The conversion brought the score to 3-1 Roadrunners at the half.
Thirteen minutes of soccer had elapsed in the second half before the Rangers scored a second time. A three-woman rally began from deep in the Rangers' zone. Sophomore defender
Emily Bradford started the near pitch-long series but faking out a defender and turning the ball up field. She used a big ball to hit senior midfielder
Shannon Slowey who used one tap to deaden the ball and another to flick it up field to Campbell. Campbell, still on the sideline cut sharply to her right, to the corner of the penalty box. From there, she powered a high-arching try that sailed over the goalies head and into the net. The score stood at 3-2, Ramapo (5-0) in the 58
th minute.
The opening of the game saw the Roadrunners waste little time getting started and score off a slow-developing give-and-go play in the third minute. Just five minutes later, Ramapo converted again when a hard charging forward stole the ball from a defender, beat the goalie, and pushed it into the open net, making the score 2-0.
Drew had its chances in the opening 10 minutes. Campbell aggressively pushed a through ball past the only defender back for Ramapo, resulting in a breakaway. A diving Roadrunner keeper, however, swallowed up Campbell's left footed shot.
Campbell found herself with another opportunity from about 20 yards out in the eighth minute. She lofted one over the keeper's head but over the crossbar as well, leaving the score at 2-0.
In the 42
nd minute, the Roadrunners executed a lead pass from one forward to the other to thread the defenders for their third goal of the day.
The Rangers now embark on a two-game, non-conference road trip that begins in Doylestown, Pa. to take on Delaware Valley College. The tilt is slated for a noontime start on Saturday, Sept. 19
