MADISON, N.J. (Sept. 26, 2015) – Despite a last second open-net opportunity, the Drew University women's soccer team dropped its first Landmark Conference contest to Juniata College, 1-0 on Saturday afternoon.
Senior forward
Emma Campbell and freshman midfielder
Caroline Kelly led the team with two shots on goal apiece, combining for seven shots overall. Junior goalie
Andee Higgins and senior goalie
Sara Nash split the contest, combining for five saves.
Juniata broke the scoreless tie that stood for 65 minutes. One forward crossed it on the ground to another who fired past a diving Higgins.
The Rangers made one final run at the net while seconds ticked off the clock. Campbell lost a defender and flew down the right side line. She crossed one in for senior midfielder
Danielle Cowan who drew the net minder out of position. Seven seconds remained as the ball trickled back towards the edge of the penalty box. Kelly put a shot on that stayed on the ground, looked bound for the empty net, but curved right at the last moment, ending the game.
With 14 minutes to go, Campbell trudged through failed slide tackle attempts to somehow maintain possession of the ball. She worked her way into the box with each step being challenged by defenders. When she finally broke free, Campbell put on shot on that was immediately swallowed up by a diving goalkeeper just inches from Campbell's foot. The one-on-one try was the Rangers best shot at an equalizer.
The Rangers embark on a four-game road trip that begins in Hoboken, N.J. when they take on the Stevens Institute of Technology on Wednesday, Sept. 30
