MADISON, N.J. (Sept. 29, 2015) – Atop rain-soaked Ranger Stadium turf, the Drew University men's soccer team secured its eighth win of the season by defeating New York University, 1-0, on Tuesday night.
The Rangers (8-1-1) are undefeated at home. The loan goal in the contest came off the foot of junior forward
Bass Etta-Ashu when he earned a penalty shot and converted in the 36
th minute of play. Sophomore forward
Benjamin Audi put on five shots in the contest, leading the team. The Rangers outshot the Violets (3-5) 16-13.
With 10 minutes to play in the first half, freshman forward
Guy Zeplovitch skipped over the half line on the far side. With Etta-Ashu streaking past a couple of Violets 30 yards downfield, Zeplovitch popped a skyscraper his way. Etta-Ashu loosely corralled the lob pass with two Violets staggering on his heels. He then got tripped up inside the penalty box, tumbled to the turf below, and was awarded a penalty shot. He went top left corner, giving Drew a 1-0 lead.
"I knew this was one of the best chances I'd get," Etta-Ashu said, "I've had so many chances this past week and kept believing I'd get a goal. My coaches trusted that I'd score at one point."
Audi tried two shots in the first half, the most dangerous of which came in the 28
th minute when he laced one that sliced left, away from the sprawling goalie but away from the far post as well, and out of play.
Drew's 1-0 lead held through halftime. In the second half, the Rangers continued to pound the net, keeping possession in the offensive end for much longer than NYU. Audi continued to rip shots, dancing into the box and challenging the goalie on multiple occasions.
Junior goalkeeper
John Marques made five saves in the victory, including a sprawling dive late in the second half, to keep the clean sheet. Marques and the Drew defense notched its sixth shutout of the season on Tuesday night.
With this victory behind them, the Rangers embark on a 3-game streak of Landmark Conference contests. The first will be on the road against Susquehanna University and will take place on October 3
rd at 1:00 p.m.
