CHESTER, Pa. (Jan. 18, 2016) – The Drew University men's basketball team wrapped up its 2015-16 non-conference schedule with an 80-70 setback at Widener University (7-9) on Monday evening.
Senior guard
Mike Klinger, the reigning Landmark Conference Athlete of the Week, led all scorers with 22 points, while
Kevin Herring II added 20 points on the strength of six 3-pointers and
Brian McLaughlin tossed in 14. Junior guard
Joey Feinberg led the Rangers' (9-8) rebounding effort with seven and paced the passing game with six assists.
The long-range shot was working early for both sides as Drew hit two, but the Pride answered with three of their own to take the early 13-8 lead within the first five minutes. Two treys by McLaughlin on back-to-back Drew possessions cut the Widener lead to one, and two minutes later, a Herring three-ball tied the game at 17-17. Widener responded with another three, only to again have the lead erased by a triple on the other end from Herring, who continued his hot start to the contest.
The Pride would hold a slim lead until the 6:52 mark of the first half, when Herring and McLaughlin hit consecutive threes to hand the Rangers a 28-23 lead. Over the next five minutes, Feinberg sparked two fast break layups with rebounds and outlet passes as part of an 8-0 Drew run that saw the away team up by double-digits for the first, and only time. Widener salvaged the end of the period with a 9-2 run to end the half down 38-35.
It took the Pride two minutes into the second half to regain the lead, only to have it disappear once again to a Herring three-pointer with 16:20 to play. The next six minutes of action would be intensely even, seeing three tie scores en route to a 51-51 deadlock with 12 minutes left on the clock. From there, Widener used an 8-3 run coupled with some cold shooting from the Rangers to take a 59-54 lead. Freshman forward
Chatham Studer ended the dry spell with a layup to make it 59-56 with 7:30 left.
Widener would not relent, executing a 9-1 run to take full control of the game late in the contest. Klinger heated up from all areas of the court, hitting shots from beyond the arc, inside the paint, and from the free throw line. The effort was a bit too late, however, as the Pride maintained its advantage and protect its home court with an 80-70 victory.
The Rangers begin the final eight-game stretch of the 2015-16 season, featuring one game against each Landmark Conference team, beginning at Goucher College on Saturday, Jan. 23 at 2:00 p.m.
