Hammer Heads Home Winner in Final Minute at Swat

SWARTHMORE, Pa. (Oct. 12, 2016) – With a scoreless deadlock barreling toward overtime, Dylan Hammer had other plans. The senior co-captain headed home the game-winner with just 42 seconds left in regulation and the Drew University men's soccer team prevailed 1-0 at Swarthmore College on Wednesday night.

Turning Point: The stalemate ended in the very final minute of play, when a smart drop pass by senior Joe Sollod was settled by sophomore midfielder Anthony McMyne. Sensing it was the final chance to win the game in regulation, McMyne made his final pass count by swinging a short cross back into the middle of the box, where Hammer was waiting with bated breath.

Hammer buried the ball into the right side of the net with a needle-threading header and the Rangers held on for the remaining seconds to defeat Swartmore, 1-0, for the second straight season.

By the Number: Drew improves to 8-2-2 overall with a 5-1-1 mark away from Ranger Stadium this fall. The Garnet dip below .500 for the first time this season at 6-7 with their third consecutive loss. In games decided by one goal this season, the Rangers are now 3-2.

Top Performers: Hammer's definitive late-game tally was the fifth of his senior season, giving him a tie for the team lead with classmate Joe Sollod. Wednesday's goal marked Hammer's second game-winner of the season, which leads the 2016 club. Hammer also paced the team with four shots, all of which were on target in the road victory.

Senior goalkeeper John Marques and the Ranger defense helped preserve the clean sheet with three Marques saves in the first half and the defense not allowing a shot on goal in the second half. Marques, the reigning Landmark Conference Athlete of the Week, registered his second straight shutout and third overall.

Stat Sheet: Drew held a 15-10 advantage in shots and similar edge in shots on goal (6-3). Each team took a single corner kick and the only offside call of the contest went against Drew in the second half.

Up Next: The Rangers return to Madison following a five-game stint away from home. Drew welcomes Susquehanna University on Saturday, Oct. 15 at 3:30 p.m. for a Landmark Conference tilt at Ranger Stadium.
