MADISON, N.J. (Oct. 25, 2016) – Playing in its fifth double-overtime contest of the season, the Drew University women's soccer team suffered its first extra time loss with a 1-0 setback at FDU-Florham to a goal in the 109
th minute on Tuesday evening.
By the Numbers: Drew falls to 6-9-1 overall and 2-4 away from home, while their overtime record – all in double-overtime – falls to 3-1-1. The Devils up their overall mark to 9-7-3, which includes a stellar 7-2-1 record at Robert T. Shields Field. FDU-Florham played its sixth overtime contest of the year, moving to 2-1-3 in those games.
Top Performers: Juniors
Erin Connors and
Katie Weber each peppered the Devils' net with five shots apiece, with each player forcing three saves in the process. Senior goalkeeper
Andee Higgins made three saves in the second half to keep the game scoreless and one in each overtime period before the Golden Goal.
Turning Point: Just 1:10 away from a scoreless stalemate, the Devils converted a corner kick with a close-range header past a diving goalkeeper and defense for the walk-off victory.
Other Highlights: Drew had the majority of chances in extra time, namely during a three-minute span in double-overtime. Connors had a shot blocked and deflected over the end line for a corner. The ensuing set piece resulted in another blocked shot, and another corner. Eventually, sophomore forward
Caroline Kelly had the best chance with a shot on target, but one of nine FDU-Florham saves kept the sheet clean.
The Rangers' best opportunity at lighting up the scoreboard was in the 53
rd minute, when a Connors corner kick found the foot of sophomore forward
Meghan McDermott, whose subsequent shot was picked off the goal line by a Devil defender as the keeper was beat. The result was another corner, but a clear ended the danger.
Stat Sheet: The Rangers outshot the Devils, 20-15, including a 9-8 shots on goal advantage. Drew took 10 corners to FDU's seven, while the Rangers were called offside twice.
