BALTIMORE, Md. (March 31, 2016) – The Drew University men's lacrosse team (1-6, 0-2) was bested in a game of scoring runs against Susquehanna University (7-3, 1-1), who claimed a neutral-site Landmark Conference game, 11-6, on Friday evening at Homewood Field on the campus of Johns Hopkins University.
Top Performers: Freshman attacker
Ryan D'Alessandro took over the team-lead in goals with two on Friday, running his total to six this spring. Senior midfielder
Steven Cola assisted on half of the Rangers' goals and added one goal of his own. His three assists bring his season total to a team-high six, while he is tied with D'Alessandro for season points with 11.
The Turning Point: Susquehanna's halftime adjustments. The Rangers led 4-3 at intermission after dominating the second quarter, 3-0, thanks to two goals by D'Alessandro and one by Cola. That had erased a 2-0, and eventually, a 3-1 deficit the Crusaders had built through the first quarter. Freshman
Brendan Hamm kept the Drew momentum rolling into the third quarter with his second goal of the season to put the Rangers up 5-3, but the forward progress would stop there. The Crusaders scored five straight spanning into the fourth quarter for an 8-5 lead.
Down the Stretch: Junior
Tom Cotroneo cut the Susquehanna lead to 8-6 with 10:28 remaining in the contest, but Susquehanna's defense shored up and the offense was relentless, scoring three unanswered goals to end the game with an 11-6 final score.
Stats of the Game: Sixteen Penalties; six charged to Drew and 10 charged to Susquehanna. The Rangers converted on 3-of-7 extra-man opportunities compared to the Crusaders' 3-of-5 mark. Susquehanna won the groundball battle 30-17, while also winning 13-of-21 faceoffs.
Other Highlights: Thomas Ensmenger scored the fourth goal of his collegiate career and got Drew on the board against Susquehanna on a man-up goal with 4:14 left in the first quarter.
Up Next: The Rangers cross Madison Avenue on Saturday, March 29 for the annual battle for the Madison Cup against FDU-Florham. Opening faceoff is scheduled for 7:00 p.m. at Robert T. Shields Field.
