Women's Soccer Edged, 1-0, in Opener at Centenary

MADISON, N.J. (Sept. 2, 2016) – The Drew University women's soccer team began the 2016 season on Friday afternoon with a hard-fought 1-0 loss at Centenary (N.J.) College in the opening game of the Cyclone Classic.

Top Performers: Senior goalkeeper Andee Higgins made seven saves in her season debut, helping keep Drew (0-1) in the game throughout the 90 minutes of play. Freshman midfielder Sarah Burcaw was involved in the attack in her first collegiate contest while putting two shots on target. Junior midfielder Erin Connors also made her Drew debut with a shot on net, one of a team-high three shots.

Turning Point: The Cyclones (1-0) only needed a solitary goal to edge the Rangers on Opening Day. That goal came early in the contest as Kara LaPolice found the back of the net with a shot just outside the 18-yard box in the 13th minute.

Stat Sheet: The Rangers held an advantage in possession, especially in the second half when Drew outshot the Cyclones 5-2. The Blue & Green also showed discipline on either end of the pitch by not conceding a single corner kick, while also avoiding a single offsides call.

Up Next: The Cyclone Classic continues on Saturday, Sept. 3 as the Rangers face University of Massachusetts Boston on neutral ground beginning at 3:00 p.m.
