MADISON, NJ (Sept. 20, 2016) — In an improbable finish, senior midfielder
Dani Millick chased down a bouncing ball in the 110
th minute of play and chipped one over the goalie's head to lock in the victory for the Drew University women's soccer team, 2-1, over Mount Saint Mary College at home on Tuesday night.
Turning Point: Down a player due to a red card, and with just seconds remaining, Millick followed a loose chopping ball that deflected forward after a punt. With Ranger Stadium lights and a ticking scoreboard behind her, the senior swiped it from a defender and left with just the goalie to beat, opted for a tricky chip shot that bounced innocently into the vacated net.
Top Performers: Millick's game winner was the first goal of her collegiate career, and following coach's orders, the senior had her plan of attack already. "I saw a girl take a bad touch and ran onto it," Millick said, "This win shows that we have the heart and can finish when we need to."
Junior midfielder
Erin Connors scored the game's opening goal, registering her team-high fourth goal of the year. Senior goalkeeper
Ryan Jackson made five saves in the victory.
Other Highlights: Connors won a 50-50 ball, touched left and blasted one that tucked neatly into the far side upper 90. The score catapulted Drew to an early 1-0 lead in the 24
th minute.
After intercepting a pass deep in the offensive zone, the Knights knotted things up at one with 20 minutes to go.
Up Next: This Saturday, the all-important Landmark Conference schedule gets underway. The Rangers will travel to Elizabethtown College to face a Blue Jay team that fell in the first round of the Landmark Conference Championships in 2015, 1-0 in double-overtime. The tilt between the two teams begins at 3:30 p.m.
