PURCHASE, N.Y. (Sept. 7, 2016) – Twice the Drew University women's soccer team erased deficits at Manhattanville College on Wednesday night, and freshman midfielder
Sarah Burcaw sent the Rangers home winners with a Golden Goal in double-overtime for the 3-2 victory.
By The Numbers: Drew wins its second straight game and improves to 2-1 on the young season, while Manhattanville remains winless in its second try.
Top Performers: Burcaw's second career goal is already her most memorable, ending the second sudden death overtime period with a goal in the 104
th minute of play. Burcaw buried an empty-net shot after the Valiants' goalkeeper was out of position to break up a 1-on-1 situation just seconds earlier. Burcaw's shot was deadly accurate from 20 yards out, and the celebration was on.
Turning Points: The Rangers found themselves trailing twice on Wednesday, despite outshooting the home club 28-6 by night's end. Following a successful Manhattanville penalty kick in the 22
nd minute, sophomore midfielder
Caroline Kelly equalized with her second tally of the season just 29 seconds before halftime, a foreshadowing of Burcaw's game-winner. Kelly's goal was eerily similar to the eventual Golden Goal as she cleaned up an empty-net opportunity following the goalkeeper's disruption of a 1-on-1 breakaway.
Manhattanville pulled ahead again in the 54
th minute on a freak play. On a pass back to the goal line, senior goalkeeper
Andee Higgins cleared the ball into a Valiant and it took an unfortunate bounce directly into the Drew net for the 2-1 lead. Drew again had the answer, however, as junior midfielder
Erin Connors scored her first goal as a Ranger to knot the game at 2-2 in crunch time. In the 87
th minute, junior
Thalia Santacruz delivered a cross from the near side to Connors, who buried the equalizer to the far post to force overtime.
Other Highlights: Kelly and Connors led the aggressive Drew offense with each taking seven shots. Not long after Manhattanville's second goal, Kelly worked herself into a breakaway and was just denied her second goal of the game by the goalkeeper's fingertips.
Stat Sheet: While the timeliness of the Rangers' attack made for a stressful game, the offense was accurate and aggressive on Wednesday. Drew placed 16 of its 28 shots on target and gained control of 15 corner kicks compared to the Valiants' three. The Rangers were called offside just three times.
Up Next: The Rangers get set for Fall Fest and their 2016 home opener on Saturday, Sept. 10 against Rutgers-Newark at 1:00 p.m. at Ranger Stadium.
