Drew Rallies For 2-2 Draw at Rutgers-Newark

NEWARK, N.J. -  Marissa McGaffney (Cape May, N.J.) scored the equalizer in the 72nd minute, as the Drew University women's soccer team (6-8-1) earned a 2-2 tie against host Rutgers-Newark (8-8-1) at Alumni Field on Wednesday night.

Drew started the scoring in the 15th minute, when Leah Dentale (Northport, N.Y.) took a feed from Caroline Kelly (Livingston, N.J.) and snuck it past Rutgers-Newark goalkeeper Diana Carvalho.  The Scarlet Raiders tied it 11 minutes later on a goal by Haley Savva, then took the lead on Nicole Gomez's tally in the 58th minute.  It remained that way until McGaffney's game-tying strike in the 72nd minute.  She got open in front of the net and chipped it in for her first collegiate goal, leveling the score at 2-2.

The Rangers had a chance to win it in the 86th minute, but Carvalho just got her hand on Alex Gilgorri's (Mount Plains, N.J.) shot, knocking it over the crossbar.  Rutgers-Newark had its own late opportunity in the 88th minute.  However, Brielle Castanheira (Roxbury, N.J.) saved Savva's attempt and the contest went into overtime.

After a scoreless first overtime, Rutgers-Newark nearly won it late in the second extra period.  However, a shot by Juliana Ceballos banged a shot off the crossbar, and the game ended in a 2-2 draw.

Madison Dudziec (Stanhope, N.J.) started in goal for the Rangers and made five first-half saves.  Castanheira (2-0-1), meanwhile, tallied three saves over the final 65 minutes.  Carvalho (5-5-1) played all 110 minutes for the Scarlet Raiders and had four saves.

On Saturday, the Rangers (1-4-0 Landmark) conclude their three-game road trip with a 12:30 p.m. visit to Catholic (9-6-0, 3-2-0 Landmark).
