Rangers Fall 2-0 In “Battle of Madison”

MADISON, N.J. – On Tuesday night, the Drew University women's soccer team concluded non-conference play with its annual showdown against crosstown rival FDU-Florham.  After a rain-soaked day, it turned into a beautiful night for the "Battle of Madison," but the Rangers (6-10-1) were unable to come away with the victory, as the Devils (11-6-0) scored a goal in each half to register a 2-0 triumph at Ranger Stadium.

The Rangers had a couple of good early scoring chances.  However, they were turned away by FDU-Florham goalkeeper Ashley Paulino.  FDU-Florham then got on the board in the 18th minute when Erica Martins fired a cross that was misplayed by Drew goalkeeper Madison Dudziec (Stanhope, N.J.), putting the Devils in front 1-0.

It was more of the same in the second half, as Drew applied early pressure, but couldn't sneak one by the FDU-Florham defense.  The Devils doubled their lead after a foul at the 68-minute mark.  Nathalia Gallo lined up a direct kick from 30 yards out and put it into the upper right corner of the goal to make it 2-0 FDU-Florham.  The Devils would hold on to win by that margin despite being outshot 15-9.

Alex Gilgorri (Mount Plains, N.J.) led the Rangers with six shots in the game.  Dudziec (4-10-1) played the first half in goal and took the loss, while Brielle Castanheira (Roxbury, N.J.) made one save over the final 45 minutes.  Paulino tallied three saves for FDU-Florham.

Drew (1-5-0 Landmark) concludes the 2017 campaign on Saturday, when Goucher (7-8-2, 0-6-0 Landmark) visits Ranger Stadium for a 1 p.m. matchup.  It will be the final game in the career of the Rangers' four seniors.
