Drew Falls In Double Overtime at William Paterson

WAYNE, N.J. -  The Drew University women's soccer team traveled to William Paterson for a non-conference showdown on Wednesday night.  Despite getting on the board first, the Rangers (5-6-0) dropped a 2-1 double overtime decision to the Pioneers (8-4-0) at Pioneer Soccer Park.

In the 34th minute, a beautiful give-and-go play by Alex Gilgorri (Mount Plains, N.J.) and Sarah Racine (Denville, N.J.) paved the way for the game's first goal.  Gilgorri drew the William Paterson goalkeeper out on a breakaway, then fed Racine, who put it into the open net.

Drew maintained that 1-0 advantage until the 79th minute, when the Pioneers' Adrianna Oliveira snuck one by Madison Dudziec (Stanhope, N.J.) to tie the game.  Sarah Burcaw (Nazareth, Pa.) had a late chance, but her attempt went wide and the game went into overtime.

William Paterson outshot Drew 5-0 in the extra period.  However, Dudziec made two saves and another hit the crossbar to keep the score deadlocked thru 100 minutes.  The Pioneers won it just over a minute into the second overtime, though, as Kristen Bowe beat the defense and slipped a shot inside the right post, giving her team the 2-1 victory.

Racine's goal was her team-leading sixth of the season, and Gilgorri tallied her third assist of the year.  Dudziec (3-6-0), meanwhile, made eight saves, as the Pioneers outshot the Rangers 24-10.  William Paterson goalkeeper Angela Sandelli (8-34-0) recorded one save in the win.

After playing two straight on the road, Drew (0-2-0 Landmark) returns home on Saturday for a 2 p.m. matchup with Juniata (8-3-0, 2-0-0 Landmark).  Prior to the game, the Rangers will be holding a "#RainbowForCeleste" cancer fundraiser in honor of Celeste Bonura, Class of 2005, a former Drew women's soccer player who's currently battling Non-Hodgkin's Lymphoma.
