Rangers Pick Up First Conference Win Against Juniata

MADISON, N.J. -  The Drew University women's soccer team earned its first Landmark Conference win of the season on Saturday.  The Rangers (6-6-0, 1-2-0 Landmark) got second half goals from Lauren Cassella (Edison, N.J.) and Thalia Santacruz (Rahway, N.J.) to knock off Juniata (8-4-0, 2-1-0 Landmark) 2-0 at Ranger Stadium.

Santacruz nearly gave the Rangers a 1-0 lead midway through the first half, but her shot bounced off the crossbar and the teams went into halftime scoreless.  After Madison Dudziec (Stanhope, N.J.) made a point-blank save to keep it that way early in the second half, Cassella broke the deadlock with her second goal of the year.  Leah Dentale (Northport, N.Y.) had her shot saved before Cassella scooped up the rebound and put it past Juniata goalkeeper Kerry Leonard.

A pair of Dudziec saves kept it 1-0, then Santacruz doubled the Rangers' advantage with a 72nd-minute tally.  Dentale came streaking up the right side, and fed a perfect cross to Santacruz, who knocked it into the far corner for her second career tally and first of the year.  Juniata had one last attempt late, but Dudziec stopped it to seal the 2-0 victory and snap Drew's four-game skid.

Dudziec (4-6-0) tallied five saves, including four in the second half, in her first solo shutout of the season.  Leonard (5-3-0) recorded four saves for the Eagles, as Drew outshot Juniata 16-11.

"This is very important," Santacruz said about the win.  "I hope it gives up motivation and hypes us up for the next conference game."

Drew returns to action on Wednesday night, when first-place Scranton (7-2-2, 3-0-0 Landmark) comes to Ranger Stadium for a 7 p.m. showdown.  The Royals are currently ranked fourth in the United Soccer Coaches Mid-Atlantic regional poll.
