WILLIAMSPORT, Pa. –
The Drew University men's soccer team faced its toughest challenge of the season on Saturday in the first round of the NCAA Tournament.  And, just like they have all season, the Rangers answered the call.  After twice falling behind, Drew (20-0-1) rallied to tie it each time before Nate Race (Bridgewater, N.J.) netted the game-winner in the 59th minute of a 3-2 victory over Franklin & Marshall (11-6-2) at Lycoming College's Shangraw Athletic Complex.

Playing in its first NCAA Tournament game since 2008, Drew fell behind early, as Franklin & Marshall's Connor Whitacre scored off a corner kick in the ninth minute.  The Rangers responded almost immediately, however, tying it less than a minute after the Diplomats' goal when Marlon Rodriguez (Belleville, N.J.) headed in an Anthony McMyne (Succasunna, N.J.) corner kick.

Franklin & Marshall went back in front on Stephen Sherbahn's tally in the 33rd minute, but Drew tied it again five minutes later.  Rodriguez's shot was saved and the rebound found its way to Race, who put it into the open net to even the score at 2-2 heading into halftime.  Race struck again 14 minutes into the second half, when he took a feed from Matt Asante (Staten Island, N.Y.) and blasted it into the lower left corner to give Drew its first lead of the game.

That would prove to be the final, as the Rangers recorded their 17th straight victory, two shy of the program record set in 2003.  Drew reached the 20-win plateau for the third time (2002, 2003) in school history with its seventh NCAA Tournament win, and its first in 14 years.  This also marks the fifth consecutive season in which the Landmark Conference champion has won its NCAA Tournament opener.

Race tallied his eighth and ninth goals of the season, while Rodriguez's goal was his second.  Jason Adamo (Roxbury, N.J.) (20-0-1) made eight saves, and the Rangers were also credited with a team save when the defense cleared a shot off the goal line to keep the game tied late in the first half.  Christopher Amoruso (8-2-1) recorded seven saves for the Diplomats.

With the win, the Rangers advanced to face host Lycoming (19-2-0) in the second round tomorrow at 1 p.m.  The Warriors notched a 2-0 victory over Lehman in Saturday's first game.
