Hot Start Lifts Rangers Past Vermont Tech, 86-67

MADISON, N.J. – On Tuesday night, the Drew University men's basketball team made seven of its first 10 shots and never looked back.  The Rangers (2-2) drained 13 three-pointers and led by as many 26 points in an 86-67 victory over Vermont Tech (7-2) at Baldwin Gymnasium.

It was a 2-2 game when Yonathan Napoleon (Los Angeles, Calif.) sank a trey to ignite a 17-3 rally that put the Rangers up 19-5 just 5:36 into the contest.  Midway through the first half, Sky Harris (Edison, N.J.) dropped a three-pointer to start a 12-0 spurt that turned a 29-15 Drew lead into a 41-15 advantage.  Vermont Tech, however, ended the first half on a 13-5 run to trim its deficit to 19 points, 47-28.

The Rangers extended their cushion to 22 points early in the second half before the Knights cut their deficit to 14 at 56-42 with 12:55 remaining.  After Drew pushed the margin back to 20 points, 64-44, Vermont Tech again pulled within 14 at the 5:22 mark.  The Knights would get no closer, however, as Drew notched an 86-67 triumph.

Riley Collins (Lacey, N.J.) had a game-high 21 points to go along with four assists.  Darius Reiter (Littleton, Colo.) sank four treys and finished with 14 points, while Napoleon tallied 12 points and four assists.  Dan Roibal (Middletown, N.J.), meanwhile, posted 11 points, six rebounds and three assists.  Nate Aldrich (Franklinville, N.J.) grabbed 10 boards, as the Rangers outrebounded the Knights 40-35.  Drew shot 47.4 percent (27-of-57) from the field, 39.4 percent (13-of-33) from three-point land, and 63.3 percent (19-of-30) at the free throw line.

For the Knights, Cameron Carter led the way with 17 points.  He added five rebounds.  Titus Smith tallied 12 points and five boards, while Taiga Cantor finished with 10 points and eight rebounds.  Daniel Gill just missed a double-double with nine points and nine rebounds, and Connor Miller also recorded nine points to go along with four assists and three steals.  Vermont Tech shot 40.7 percent (24-of-59) from the floor, 30.8 percent (8-of-26) from downtown, and 61.1 percent (11-of-18) at the charity stripe.

After playing three games in four days, the Rangers will now have a week off before returning to action.  Drew continues its seven-game homestand with a 7 p.m. matchup against Wilkes (3-0) on Nov. 29.
