Drew Splits Tri-Meet With Marywood, Susquehanna

SCRANTON, Pa. –
The Drew University men's and women's swimming & diving teams took on Landmark Conference opponents for the first time this season on Saturday afternoon, with each squad posting a win and a loss.  Both the men and women defeated host Marywood and fell to Susquehanna at the Marywood University Aquatics Center.
 
On the men's side, the Rangers dropped a narrow 144-141 decision to Susquehanna while also posting a 181-86 victory over Marywood.  The 200 yard medley relay squad of Matheus Macena (Sao Paulo, Brazil), Michael Ma (Redwood City, Calif.), Ryan Underwood (Etters, Pa.) and Jack Mahoney (Erie, Pa.) got Drew off to a good start, taking first overall in a time of 1:39.42.  Macena also led a 1-2-3 showing in the 100 yard butterfly (54.25) and grabbed second place in the 100 yard backstroke (56.03).  Ma, meanwhile, earned a win in 200 yard individual medley (2:02.75) to go along with a second-place finish in the 100 butterfly (54.34).
 
Alexandre Sannibale (South Pasadena, Calif.) notched a pair of first-place finishes in the 200 yard butterfly (2:05.97) and 500 yard freestyle (5:06.06) to go along with third place in the 200 yard freestyle.  Mahoney grabbed second place in the 100 yard freestyle in 49.31 seconds, and he also won the 200 freestyle (1:49.64).
 
Garrett Pilkington (West Milford, N.J.) (10:40.51) and Mack Fox (Randolph, N.J.) (10:40.78), finished first and second in the 1000 yard freestyle, and Pilkington was also third in the 500 freestyle (5:09.30).  Angelo Angione (Hoboken, N.J.), meanwhile, won both the 1-meter (145.70) and 3-meter (115.50) diving events.
 
Drew's women topped the Pacers by a 155-141 count and lost to the River Hawks by a 176-120 margin.  Mal Vishwanath (Banglaore, India) earned first-place finishes in three different events.  She posted times of 1:55.95 in the 200 yard freestyle, 54.46 seconds in the 100 yard freestyle, and 5:12.19  in the 500 yard freestyle.  Vishwanath also swam on the victorious 400 yard freestyle relay squad, joining Jenny Stein (Calabasas, Calif.), Eve Morel (Bourgogne, France) and Jamie Riffel (New Providence, N.J.).
 
Stein also placed second in the 50 yard freestyle (25.57) and won both diving events.  She recorded a score of 218.90 points on the 1-meter board and 233.75 points in the 3-meter competition. 
 
Stephanie Cushman (Brick, N.J.), meanwhile, secured first place in both the 100 yard backstroke (1:01.39) and 200 yard individual medley (2:20.66) to go along with a second-place showing in the 200 yard backstroke (2:18.66).  Riffel was third in the 200 backstroke (2:18.88), and her time of 11:36.89 in the 1000 yard freestyle was good for second place overall.
 
After taking next weekend off, the Rangers return to competition on Nov. 18.  Drew will take part in a tri-meet against FDU-Florham and host Elizabethtown at 1 p.m.
