Rutgers-Newark Snaps Drew’s Winning Streak

NEWARK, N.J. – The Drew University men's basketball team (6-4) dropped an 80-71 decision to Rutgers-Newark (5-6) at the Golden Dome on Saturday afternoon.  With the loss, the Rangers saw their four-game winning streak come to an end.

Rutgers-Newark built an early 6-2 lead before the Rangers went on an 11-2 run to take a 13-8 lead at the 15:18 mark of the first half.  After the Scarlet Raiders got back within one at 13-12, Drew rattled off nine straight points to open up its largest lead of the contest, a 22-12 advantage with 11:06 left before halftime.  Rutgers-Newark battled back within two at 30-28, but a Sky Harris (Edison, N.J.) free throw started an 8-0 spurt that brought the cushion back to 10 points, 38-28.  The Scarlet Raiders' Erick Loften-Harris hit a three as the halftime buzzer sounded, though, cutting the margin to 38-31 at intermission.

After a Yonathan Napoleon (Los Angeles, Calif.) trey gave the Rangers a 44-35 edge with 17:35 left in the contest, Rutgers-Newark scored nine of the next 11 points to tie it at 48-48.  Riley Collins (Lacey, N.J.) sank a pair of free throws to put Drew back in front before a Mark Thomas layup on the other end knotted the score again at 50-50.  Dan Roibal (Middletown, N.J.) responded with a trey, though, and the Rangers extended their lead to 56-52 on a Napoleon three-point play at the 9:44 mark.

However, Rutgers-Newark countered with six straight points to pull in front, 58-56.  After the teams traded three-pointers, Thomas hit a jumper to start an 8-0 Scarlet Raiders run that put Rutgers-Newark ahead for good.  Drew got back within two on a Napoleon trey that made it 69-67 with 1:51 left, but the Scarlet Raiders ended the game on an 11-4 spurt to close out the 80-71 victory.

Napoleon paced the Rangers with 22 points, while Roibal tallied 12 points on 5-for-6 shooting.  Collins had 11 points to go along with seven assists and three steals, and Harris contributed nine points off the bench.  Nate Aldrich (Franklinville, N.J.) grabbed a game-high 14 rebounds, as the Rangers held a 37-36 advantage on the glass.  Drew shot 36.5 percent (23-of-63) from the field, 34.3 percent (12-of-35) from long range, and 92.9 percent (13-of-14) at the free throw line.

Chase Barneys had 22 points to lead Rutgers-Newark.  He also posted four assists and three steals.  Thomas finished with 16 points, while Dave Lunsford tallied 14 points, nine rebounds and three blocks.  Tyler Ofray added 11 points for the Scarlet Raiders, who were 30-for-59 (50.8 percent) from the floor.  Loften-Harris, meanwhile, tallied nine points, nine assists and five boards.  Rutgers-Newark shot 52.6 percent (10-of-19) from three-point land and 66.7 percent (10-of-15) at the charity stripe.

This was Drew's only game in a 19-day stretch.  The Rangers are off until Dec. 29-30, when they take part in the Al Senavitis Memorial Tournament at DeSales.  Drew begins the event with an 8 p.m. matchup against Alvernia (2-6) on Friday, Dec. 29.
