Rangers Topple King’s For Second Straight Win

MADISON, N.J. – After posting a thrilling eight-point win over Catholic in its Landmark Conference opener on Saturday, the Drew University men's basketball team returned to non-conference play with a matchup against King's on Tuesday night.  In a back-and-forth contest that featuring nine ties and 13 lead changes, the Rangers (4-3) ultimately prevailed, 92-88, over the Monarchs (3-4) at Baldwin Gymnasium.

King's jumped out to an early 7-2 lead, but the Rangers stormed right back to get within one, 11-10, at the 13:57 mark of the first half.  After the Monarchs scored five straight points to push their advantage back to six, 16-10, Drew countered with a 9-3 spurt to even the contest at 19-19.  Drew took its first lead when a Riley Collins (Lacey, N.J.) layup made it 24-22 with 6:04 remaining before halftime.

The Monarchs responded with back-to-back three-pointers, though, to go up 28-24.  Drew immediately went back in front on a Chatham Studer (Redding, Conn.) layup and a Dan Roibal (Middletown, N.J.) trey, but King's ended the half on an 11-7 clip to take a 39-36 advantage into the locker room.

A Collins three-pointer on Drew's first possession of the second half tied the score at 39-39 before King's went on a 12-3 run to open up the largest lead of the game for either side, a 53-44 cushion with 16:01 to go.  However, Nate Aldrich (Franklinville, N.J.) hit a layup on the other end to start a 12-4 Drew rally that put the Rangers back in front, 58-57.  The Monarchs scored nine of the next 11 points to regain a 66-60 edge midway through the period, but the Rangers again countered, as Collins erupted for eight straight points over a span of 53 seconds.

With the score even at 75-75, Yonathan Napoleon (Los Angeles, Calif.) nailed a pair of free throws to start a 7-0 run that gave Drew its largest lead, an 82-75 cushion with 2:28 left.  After King's rallied to tie it at 84-84, Collins hit five clutch foul shots to make it 89-86 with 12 seconds remaining.  The Monarchs had the ball and a chance to tie, but Mike Boice (Lanoka Harbor, N.J.) stole it and was fouled.  He hit both free throws to put the game away, as the Rangers earned a 92-88 victory.

Collins scored 21 of his game-high 23 points in the second half.  Aldrich, meanwhile, had a double-double with 18 points and 18 rebounds.  He also recorded three assists and two blocks.  Napoleon finished with 15 points and seven assists, while Roibal and Sky Harris (Edison, N.J.) contributed nine points apiece.  Boice tallied eight points to go along with five steals and two blocks.  The Rangers shot 45.6 percent (31-of-68) from the field and held a 55-29 advantage on the glass.  Drew went 8-for-25 (32 percent) from three-point land and 22-for-30 (73.3 percent) at the free throw line.

For the Monarchs, Connor Callejas led the way with 19 points.  Tony Maloney finished with 14 points and eight rebounds, while Chris Fazzini and Tyler Millan added 11 points apiece.  Joshua Bailey and Noah Tanner, meanwhile, each contributed eight points and four assists.  King's shot 42 percent (29-of-69) from the floor, 37.5 percent (12-of-32) from long range, and 85.7 percent (18-of-21) at the charity stripe.

Drew concludes its seven-game homestand at 7 p.m. on Thursday with the annual "Battle of Madison" against local rival FDU-Florham (0-6).  The Rangers are looking for their first win over the Devils since the 2014-15 season.
