Drew Defeats FDU-Florham In “Battle of Madison”

MADISON, N.J. – The Drew University men's basketball team concluded its seven-game homestand in style on Thursday night.  The Rangers (5-3) sank a season-high 13 three-pointers and scored 90 points for the third consecutive outing, as they posted a 90-69 victory over local rival FDU-Florham (0-7) in the annual "Battle of Madison" at Baldwin Gymnasium.  It was Drew's first win over the Devils since the 2014-15 season.

Drew actually trailed 12-9 before draining four consecutive treys to go up nine, 21-12, at the 12:44 mark of the first half.  FDU-Florham trimmed its deficit six at 25-19, but the Rangers responded with a 19-5 spurt to make it 44-24.  After a three-pointer by the Devils' Rajaan Dixon, Drew rattled off 10 of the next 12 points to extend its advantage to 25 points, 54-29, and a long ball by Yonathan Napoleon (Los Angeles, Calif.) made it a 26-point game, 57-31, at the break.

FDU-Florham began the second half on a 16-1 run, though, to get back within 14 points, 58-44.  However, the Rangers countered with a 13-5 rally of their own to bring the margin back to 22 points, 71-49, midway through the period.  The Devils scored the next six points to make it 71-55 at the 9:43 mark, but would get no closer the rest of the way.  Three-pointers by Riley Collins (Lacey, N.J.) and Darius Reiter (Littleton, Colo.) pushed the cushion back over 20 points, and the Rangers earned their third straight win by a 90-69 count.

Napoleon tallied a game-high 23 points to go along with four assists.  Collins finished with 22 points, while Nate Aldrich (Franklinville, N.J.) had his second straight double-double with 14 points and 11 rebounds.  Reiter chipped in eight points, and Miles Lewis (Fair Lawn, N.J.) registered six points, five boards and four assists.  Mike Boice (Lanoka Harbor, N.J.), meanwhile, contributed six points, four steals and two blocks.  Drew shot 54.1 percent (33-of-61) from the field and outrebounded FDU-Florham 41-36.  The Rangers were 13-for-28 (46.4 percent) from long range and 11-for-21 (52.4 percent) at the free throw line.

Four different Devils scored in double-figures, led by Dixon and Ahmad St. Fleur's 14 points apiece.  Dixon also grabbed seven rebounds, while St. Fleur had six assists and four steals.  Anthony Mitchell posted 13 points, five boards and four steals, and Darren Davy finished with 10 points to go along with a team-best eight rebounds.  FDU-Florham shot 39.3 percent (24-of-61) from the floor, 31.8 percent (7-of-22) from three-point land, and 60.9 percent (14-of-23) at the charity stripe.

After playing seven straight at home, the Rangers don't return to Baldwin Gymnasium for more than a month.  Drew begins a five-game road trip with a 12 p.m. visit to Saint Elizabeth (2-5) on Sunday.
