MADISON, N.J.- On Friday afternoon, the Drew University men's soccer team (1-0-0) began its 2017 campaign with a 6-0 victory over Mount Ida (0-1-0) in the opening game of the 34
th annual Drew Fall Festival at Ranger Stadium. The Rangers have now won their season opener in each of the last four years.
"It feels very good to start the season with a win," Head Coach
Lenny Armuth said. "The first game is always the hardest, so I'm glad we had a good outing on the first day."
Drew took a 1-0 lead on
Nate Race's (Bridgewater, N.J.) blast from 20 yards out in the 29
th minute. Race found the back of the net twice in his first collegiate contest, as he added another from a tight angle off a feed from
Aidan Cserhat (Taos, N.M.) in the 60
th minute. That tally was part of a five-goal second half barrage for the Rangers that also included scores from
Andy Imoh (Sugar Land, Texas),
Matt Asante (Staten Island, N.Y.) and
Cole Bosch (Fair Lawn, N.J.), as well as an own goal that deflected in off a Mount Ida defender.
Goalkeeper
Jason Adamo (Roxbury, Mass.) (1-0-0) made three saves in the shutout. The Mustangs' Riley Ford (0-1-0) recorded five saves, as the Rangers held a 29-6 advantage in shots.
The Rangers conclude the Drew Fall Festival on Saturday with a 1 p.m. matchup against Hunter (0-1-0). The Hawks dropped a 1-0 decision to Farmingdale State on Friday.
