Second Half Flurry Lifts Drew Past Muhlenberg

MADISON, N.J.-  The goals just keep on coming for the Drew University men's soccer team.  After a scoreless first half, the Rangers (5-0-1) erupted for six second-half tallies en route to a 6-0 victory over Muhlenberg (2-1-1) at Ranger Stadium on Wednesday night.  Drew has now scored at least five times in four of its six games this season.

Playing for the first time since debuting at No. 10 in the United Soccer Coaches Mid-Atlantic regional rankings, Drew almost conceded an early tally.  However, Muhlenberg was whistled for offsides on the play, nullifying the goal.  That would prove to be the Mules' best scoring chance of the night, as the Rangers outshot Muhlenberg 23-5.

It was 0-0 at the break, but Drew broke through less than a minute into the second half when Max Correa (Belleville, N.J.) played a cross from a difficult angle that went past the goalkeeper and into the back of the net.  Five minutes later, Anthony McMyne (Succasunna, N.J.) found Matt Asante (Staten Island, N.Y.), who fired a strike from 25 yards out that bounced off the left post and in.

Drew wasn't done, however.  After a yellow card in the box resulted in a penalty kick, Aidan Cserhat (Taos, N.M.) put it home to increase the Rangers' lead to 3-0.  Cserhat scored again a minute later, then Nate Race (Bridgewater, N.J.) gathered his own rebound after a save and took advantage of the empty net to make it 5-0.  The Rangers added another tally in the 80th minute, when Alexi Velazquez (Kearney, N.J.) got free and beat the keeper on a breakaway.

Five different Rangers scored in the game, with Cserhat finding the back of the net twice to increase his team-leading total to seven goals on the season.  Jason Adamo (Roxbury, N.J.) (5-0-1) made two saves in his third shutout of the year.  Jordan Schreer (2-1-1), meanwhile, tallied four saves for Muhlenberg.

Up next for Drew is a 3 p.m. matchup with Manhattanville (2-3-0) at Ranger Stadium on Saturday.
