Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

Rangers Move to 9-0-1 With 3-1 Victory Over NYU

MADISON, N.J. -  In a battle of unbeaten, regionally-ranked squads, the Drew University men's soccer team (9-0-1) scored three goals in the first half to notch a 3-1 victory over NYU (5-1-1) at Ranger Stadium on Tuesday afternoon.  At 9-0-1, the Rangers are off to their best 10-game start since 1994.

Drew, which entered the game ranked No. 5 in the Mid-Atlantic Region, earned a penalty kick in the 11th minute, but NYU goalkeeper Grant Engel made the save before Benjamin Audi's (Paramus, N.J.) attempt on the rebound went wide.  The Rangers did break through in the 22nd minute, however, as Aidan Cserhat (Taos, N.M.) got free from his defender and put it into the left side of the net.  It was his league-leading 12th goal of the year, and Cserhat has now scored in six straight games.

Nine minutes later, Nate Race (Bridgewater, N.J.) had a shot blocked right back to him, and he put away the rebound for a 2-0 Rangers lead.  That advantage increased to 3-0 in the 34th minute when Cristian Carbini (Long Valley, N.J.) found Matt Asante (Staten Island, N.Y.), who went to the near post for his fourth tally of the season.

NYU, the No. 10 team in the East Region, got on the board just after halftime, as Richie Rambarran's cross-body shot beat Jason Adamo (Roxbury, N.J.).  It was the first goal Drew has allowed to an opposing player since Sept. 10 (the Rangers did surrender two own-goals during that span).  The Rangers' defense held tight the rest of the way, though, and Drew held on for a 3-1 triumph to improve to 6-0-0 at home.

"It was a very good win," Head Coach Lenny Armuth said.  "NYU is a very good team, and we played a phenomenal first half."

The Rangers outshot the Violets 32-7, including a 24-1 edge in the first half, and Engel (5-1-1) made 10 saves in a losing effort.  Adamo (9-0-1) was credited with one save in the victory.

On Saturday, Drew (1-0-0 Landmark) resumes conference play with an 8 p.m. matchup at Moravian (6-1-1, 1-0-0 Landmark).  It will be the Rangers' only road contest in a six-game string.
