Early Goal Proves Decisive In 1-0 Loss to #16 Stevens

MADISON, N.J. -  No. 16 Stevens scored 26 seconds into its encounter with the Drew University women's soccer team at Ranger Stadium on Wednesday night.  And that goal would prove to be the difference, as the Ducks (6-1-1) posted a 1-0 victory over the Rangers (5-4-0).

Stevens won the coin toss and turned that opening possession into the only goal of the game.  Julia Panko found a streaking Gabby Saade down the right side, and she shot it past Madison Dudziec (Stanhope, N.J.) for the early lead.  The Ducks would maintain that advantage over the remainder of the half, limiting Drew's offensive opportunities.  The Rangers' best chance came in the 28th minute, when Leah Dentale (Northport, N.Y.) had a shot saved out of play for a corner kick.  However, Thalia Santacruz's (Rahway, N.J.) header off the corner went high, and Stevens took its 1-0 advantage into halftime.

The Rangers had another quality scoring opportunity came early in the second half, when Alex Gilgorri (Mount Plains, N.J.) got free and fired one on net.  Stevens goalkeeper Lindsey Mahnken made the save, though, keeping it a 1-0 game.  The sides played an even second half, but Drew was unable to sneak an equalizer by Mahnken, and the Ducks held on for the 1-0 win.

Dudziec (3-4-0) was credited with three saves in the losing effort, while Mahnken (6-1-1) stopped a pair of Drew shots.

On Saturday, the Rangers (0-1-0 Landmark) resume conference play with a 1 p.m. showdown at Moravian (6-2-1, 0-1-0 Landmark).  It will be the first of two straight road games for the Rangers.
