Rangers’ Winning Streak Snapped at Scranton

SCRANTON, Pa. – The Drew University men's basketball team suffered its first loss of 2018 on Wednesday night.  The Rangers (13-5, 6-1 Landmark) saw their seven-game winning streak come to an end, as Scranton (9-9, 5-2 Landmark) rallied for an 84-73 victory at the John Long Center.  It was just Drew's second defeat in its last 13 games.

Scranton scored the first eight points of the contest, but Drew responded with a 17-6 run to take a 17-14 lead with 9:06 left in the first half.  After the Royals went back in front, 27-26, a Riley Collins (Lacey, N.J.) jumper sparked a 13-2 rally that gave the Rangers a 39-29 edge with 1:08 remaining before halftime.  Scranton closed out the period on a 5-0 spurt, though, cutting Drew's advantage to 39-34 at intermission.

Darius Reiter (Littleton, Colo.) erupted for six straight points over the first 65 seconds of the second half, as the Rangers increased their edge to 45-34.  However, Scranton countered with a 20-5 run to pull ahead 54-50 at the 11:35 mark.  Drew tied it at 57-57 with 10:15 to go before the Royals scored seven straight points to regain the lead, 64-57.  The Rangers pulled back within four, 66-62, with 6:01 to go, but would get no closer, as Scranton handed Drew an 84-73 loss, its first since Dec. 16.

Collins paced the Rangers with 21 points.  He also tallied six rebounds, five assists and six steals.  Sky Harris (Edison, N.J.) recorded 16 points off the bench, and Nate Aldrich (Franklinville, N.J.) contributed 15 points to go along with eight rebounds.  Yonathan Napoleon (Los Angeles, Calif.), meanwhile, finished with seven rebounds and four assists.  Drew shot 36.9 percent (24-of-65) from the floor, 25 percent (4-of-16) from downtown, and 72.4 percent (21-of-29) at the charity stripe.

Ethan Danzig had 30 points to lead five Royals in double-figures.  Dan Schanweiler recorded a double-double with 13 points and 17 boards, as Scranton outrebounded Drew 41-38.  Mitch Cross tallied 14 points, while Kyle DeVerna contributed 12 points and seven assists.  Matthew Mancuso added 10 points, eight rebounds and three blocks for the Royals, who shot 43.9 percent (25-of-57) from the floor.  Scranton was 14-for-32 (43.8 percent) from long range and 20-for-27 (74.1 percent) at the free throw line.

On Saturday, the Rangers return home for a 2 p.m. matchup with Goucher (0-17, 0-7 Landmark).  Drew notched an 82-59 triumph in the first meeting of the season between the teams on Jan. 6.
