Castanheira’s Golden Goal Lifts Women’s Soccer

MADISON, N.J. – Senior Alexis Castanheira booted in the game-winning goal in the 101st minute and the Drew University women's soccer team earned a 2-1 double-overtime win over non-conference foe Rutgers-Newark at a chilly Ranger Stadium Tuesday evening. It was Drew's second-straight double-overtime affair after earning a 2-2 tie versus Moravian College in a Landmark Conference match this past Saturday.

Golden Goal: Over a scoreless first overtime, the Rangers (6-6-3) wasted little time in the second extra session. Just 32 seconds into the period, junior Sarah Burcaw rolled a cross from the right side to Castanheira, who from the center of the box drilled in her third goal of the season and her first career golden goal. Burcaw's assist was the first of her career.

Trading Tallies: Neither side scored in the opening half but sophomore Leah Dentale broke the deadlock in the 57th minute. From the left side of the box, she accepted a cross from senior Kayla Fleming and belted home a left-footer for her second goal of the season. Her tally also gave Fleming her first collegiate assist and point. However, the Scarlet Raiders answered in the 80th minute with an impressive long-range shot into the upper-left corner from Jessica Moreno. The Rangers had an excellent look at the net in the closing seconds of regulation but sophomore Shannon Miller had her blast saved by Rutgers keeper Heidi Paulson.

Overtime: Drew came out pressing into the first extra session and Dentale nearly won it in the 93rd minute, lifting a rising shot from well outside the box that required a leaping fingertip save from Paulson. The Rangers survived a close call of their own when a rip from Iasia Goeloe hit the crossbar in the 96th minute.

Stats Sheet: In an evenly played match, Drew held a slim 13-11 shot advantage. Both sides were awarded four corner kicks. Paulson made five saves while sophomore Madison Dudziec stopped three shots for the Blue and Green.

Up Next: The Rangers return to Landmark Conference action on Saturday, when they visit Juniata College at 4 p.m.
