Men’s Soccer Clinches Landmark Playoff Spot with Record-Setting Offense

MADISON, N.J. - The Drew University men's soccer team tied the record for most goals in a Landmark Conference (LC) game and clinched an LC playoff berth with a 7-0 victory at Juniata College Saturday afternoon. The Rangers (10-5, 4-2 LC), who have cemented a spot in the Landmark Conference playoffs for the third year in a row, equaled a one-week-old record after Catholic University defeated Juniata by the same score last Saturday. Junior Matt Asante scored a pair of goals while classmate Aidan Cserhat added a goal and an assist.

Scoring Plays: The Rangers wasted little time getting on the scoresheet, as Cserhat fed sophomore Nate Race at the two-minute mark. Cserhat found the back of the net in the 24th minute with his Landmark Conference-leading 11th goal of the year before Asante got into the act, striking with just one minute on the clock to give the Rangers a commanding 3-0 lead heading into the locker room. Sophomore Tony Oliveira kept the offense rolling in the second half, converting a feed from senior Anthony McMyne for his first collegiate goal. Senior Alexi Velazquez followed up with sixth goal of the season off a dish from senior Max Correa before senior Brian Cerri scored his first career goal on a pass from freshman Kuki Armenteros. Asante would cap the offensive display, striking once again in the final minute of the half for his fifth tally of the year, which gave him his first career multiple-goal game.

Stat Sheet: The Rangers fired off a season high 30 shots while the defense was able to hold Juniata to just two shots during the contest. Junior Jason Adamo made a pair of saves over the opening 76 minutes for the Rangers before giving way to freshman Calum Erlenborn, who played the rest of the way in goal. Drew held a 6-1 advantage in corner kicks while the Eagles were whistled for twice as many fouls (12-6) than the Rangers.

Notes: Drew's seven goals marked the team's highest offensive output since a 9-2 win over FDU-Florham last season...the team's previous record for Landmark Conference goals also came last year, in a 6-0 win over Elizabethtown...the Rangers have now reached the Landmark Conference playoffs 10 times in 12 years since the league was formed.

Up Next: The Rangers will conclude the regular season when they host Landmark rival Susquehanna University next Saturday at 1 p.m. on Senior Day.
