MADISON, N.J. – The Drew University men's swimming & diving team won on the final event to capture a dramatic 112-107 victory over Montclair State University in its home opener Saturday afternoon at Kirby Pool.
With the Rangers trailing 103-101, the 200-freestyle relay team of junior
Jack Mahoney, freshman
Josh Roberts, junior
Jeremy Bradford, and sophomore
Alex Longacre just held off the team from Montclair State, winning by seven-hundredths of a second.
The win marked Drew's first over Montclair since the 2001-02 season. The Red Hawks had claimed the previous 15 match-ups.
The Rangers (1-1) won eight of 13 events on the day, with junior
Michael Ma leading the way with victories in both the 200-IM (2:01.78) and the 200-butterfly (2:01.41). Sophomore
Angelo Angione was the lone diver to compete in the men's meet and earned first-place points on both the 1-meter (213.98) and 3-meter (180.68) boards.
Capturing one individual win apiece were Roberts in the 200-freestyle (1:47.92), freshman
Jacob Zajdzinski in the 50-freestyle (22.24), and sophomore
Alexandre Sannibale in the 500-freestyle (4:56.85).
Zajdzinski also posted a runner-up showing in the 100-freestyle (48.55), as did sophomore
Matheus Macena in the 200-backstroke (2:08.13).
Drew returns to action in two weeks, when it hosts Marywood University and Susquehanna University on Nov. 3 starting at 1 p.m.
