WASHINGTON, D.C. - The Drew University men's soccer team outshot Catholic 19-12 but the second-seeded Cardinals edged the third-seeded Rangers 2-1 in the Landmark Conference semifinals Wednesday evening.
How it Happened: Catholic (11-5-1) struck first when Nelson Zimmerman headed in a long pass forward in the 25th minute on the team's fourth shot of the night. But the Rangers (11-6) responded by outshooting the Cardinals 6-2 over the remainder of the half, and they broke through when junior defender
Ian Sawicki headed in a corner kick from senior
Max Correa in the 39th minute. In the second half, Drew had an excellent chance to seize the lead early on a breakaway but Catholic goalie Jack Long snared a header from junior
Aidan Cserhat. The Cardinals then struck for the game-winner in the 65th minute, as Ben Alexander drilled in a shot from the top of the box off another long pass upfield. The Rangers threatened in the closing minutes, gaining two corners and firing off three shots in the final two minutes. However, they were unable to dent Long, who saved all three shots, including two more headers from Cserhat in the final minute.
Stat Sheet: In addition to their advantage in shots, the Rangers held a 7-3 edge in corner kicks. Long made 12 saves for the Cardinals while junior
Jason Adamo turned aside a pair of shots for Drew, including a tremendous leaping deflection in the 60th minute. Cserhat led all players with eight shots, including seven that were on frame.
Up Next: Catholic moves on to the Landmark Conference championship game, where it will visit top-seeded Elizabethtown College on Saturday. The Blue Jays defeated Moravian College 2-1 in the other semifinal on Wednesday. The Rangers will now hope for a possible bid in the ECAC Division III Tournament, which opens the weekend of Nov. 10-11. The field will be announced on Monday.
