MADISON, N.J. - Junior
Aidan Cserhat scored a pair of goals while classmate
Jason Adamo tied a career-high with eight saves as the Drew University men's soccer team defeated Grove City College 4-2 in the quarterfinals of the ECAC Division III Championships Sunday afternoon at a sunny and cold Ranger Stadium. With the win, Drew (13-6) advances to the semifinals, where it will play Wesley College on Saturday at Rutgers-Newark starting at 5 p.m.
How it Happened: The Wolverines (15-3-4) struck for the opening goal just five minutes into the contest, but the Rangers were quick to respond, as Cserhat ripped in a shot off a quick pass from his brother, senior
Niko Cserhat, and freshman
Brandon Jimenez in a scramble off a corner kick less than a minute later. Neither side scored again until the 41st minute, when junior
Matt Asante put Drew ahead for good, taking a feed from senior
Brian Cerri and lifting a shot into the upper-left corner. Adamo helped keep the visitors at bay with five first-half saves, including back-to-back stops on the ground in the 24th minute. The Rangers led 2-1 at the half, then added another tally when sophomore
Nate Race converted a give-and-go with senior
Alexi Velazquez, taking a cross from the left and burying a shot into a wide-open net in the 59th minute. Grove City threatened late, converting a penalty kick in the 88th minute, but the Rangers iced the game 33 second later when Cserhat struck again, taking a pass from Race and beating the goalie at the top of the box for his 15th goal of the season and his fourth multi-goal game of the year.
Stat Sheet: Drew outshot the Wolverines 26-17, including 17-9 in the second half. The Rangers also owned a 8-4 advantage in corner kicks and were whistled for two more fouls (11-9) than Grove City.
Between the Pipes: Adamo equaled his career-high save total set last season in a 3-2 victory over Franklin & Marshall College in the NCAA Division III Tournament. Luke Greenway turned aside 11 shots for the Wolverines.
