Drew Begins Season With Loss to Gwynedd Mercy

MADISON, N.J. – In its first game under new Head Coach Doug Sage, the Drew University men's lacrosse team battled back from a 3-1 deficit to tie the score midway through the second quarter.  However, the Rangers (0-1) scoreless for nearly 30 minutes after that, Gwynedd Mercy (1-0) posted a 10-5 victory at Ranger Stadium on Saturday afternoon in each team's season opener.

Kyle MacDonnell (Niantic, Conn.) scored the first goal of the game less than a minute in before Gwynedd Mercy countered with three straight to take a 3-1 lead after one quarter.  After Kevin Goettlich (Florham Park, N.Y.) cut Drew's deficit to 3-2, Joe Palmieri (Guilford, Conn.) tied the game with 9:20 left until halftime.  The Griffins notched the last three goals of the half, though, and took a 6-3 cushion into the break.

Gwynedd Mercy extended its advantage to 10-3 early in the fourth quarter, then Goettlich snapped the Rangers' scoreless streak with his second goal of the contest.  He added another four minutes later to cap the scoring in the Griffins' 10-5 triumph.

Goettlich picked up three ground balls to go along with his hat trick.  Seamus O'Connor (Portsmouth, R.I.) handed out a pair of assists, while Ryan D'Alessandro (Glen Ridge, N.J.) and Jonny Bronander (Glen Ridge, N.J.) each secured a team-best four ground balls.  Starting goalkeeper Nate Sanders (Annapolis, Md.) took the loss after yielding eight goals and making four saves.  Mike McGeeney (Annapolis, Md.) surrendered two goals over the final 22:11.

For the Griffins, Jacob Snavely recorded four goals and Ryan Simpson added three tallies.  Joe Simpson found the back of the net twice, while Kohler Setley distributed four assists.  In addition to collecting six ground balls, goalkeeper Chris Burns (1-0) made 12 saves and allowed five goals.  Gwynedd Mercy held a 29-24 edge in ground balls and converted on three of its five extra-man opportunities.

The Rangers will play their next four on the road before returning home.  Drew begins the stretch next Saturday with a 3:30 p.m. matchup at Vassar (0-0).
