Drew Completes First-Ever Season Sweep of Catholic

WASHINGTON – For the first time in program history, the Drew University men's basketball team has swept the season series with Landmark Conference rival Catholic.  The Rangers (16-5, 9-1 Landmark), who snapped a 14-game losing streak against the Cardinals, beat Catholic (12-9, 6-4 Landmark) at the DuPont Athletic Center for the first time ever on Saturday afternoon.  The Cardinals missed a three-pointer at the buzzer, as first-place Drew solidified its place atop the Landmark standings with a 75-74 victory.

Drew led by as many as 10 points before Catholic rallied to tie it at 73-73 with 1:23 remaining.  However, Darius Reiter (Littleton, Colo.) sank a three-pointer on the other end to give the Rangers a 76-73 advantage with 1:04 left.  A Jay Howard bucket brought the Cardinals within one, 76-75, at the 44-second mark, then Catholic got the ball back on a Drew turnover with 17 seconds to go.  Catholic took timeout and held for the last shot, but a three-point attempt by Billy Barnes was off the mark and Reiter secured the rebound, as time expired, giving Drew the one-point win.

Yonathan Napoleon (Los Angeles, Calif.) paced the Rangers with 19 points, while Reiter and Riley Collins (Lacey, N.J.) tallied 14 points and six rebounds apiece.  Collins also dished out six assists.  Sky Harris (Edison, N.J.) recorded 10 points off the bench, and Nate Aldrich (Franklinville, N.J.) contributed nine points to go along with eight rebounds.  Drew shot 43.1 percent (28-of-65) from the field, 34.4 percent (11-of-32) from long range, and 75 percent (9-of-12) at the charity stripe.

The Rangers raced out to an early 10-3 lead and held an 18-8 advantage with 14:30 left in the first half.  Catholic tied it at 27-27 before Drew responded with a 7-2 rally to regain a five-point cushion, 32-29, with 6:02 remaining until halftime.  After the Cardinals scored six straight points to go in front, Malachi Walker (Fords, N.J.) slammed one home to give the lead back to the Rangers.  Reiter then sank a layup just prior to the halftime buzzer, giving Drew a 40-37 edge at the break.

A Napoleon trey extended the margin to six, 43-37, a mere eight seconds into the second half, but Catholic gradually chipped away, trimming its deficit to one, 57-56, with 10:54 remaining.  After Drew went on a 9-2 run to push its advantage back to eight points, 66-58, the Cardinals again responded.  Catholic tied the score at 69-69 with3:47 left, and it would be deadlocked three more times before the Rangers earned the 76-75 win, their second one-point triumph of the season.

Harris notched a game-high 36 points and added nine rebounds for the Cardinals.  Andre Mitchell finished with 10 points and three assists, and Jimmy Golaszewski registered nine points and eight rebounds.  Riley Hayes, meanwhile, posted eight points and 12 boards, as Catholic held a 41-37 edge on the glass.  Overall, Catholic shot 44.3 percent (27-of-61) from the floor, 31.3 percent (5-of-16) from three-point land, and 66.7 percent (16-of-24) at the free throw line.

After playing four of their last five on the road, the Rangers begin a two-game homestand on Wednesday night, when Scranton (10-11, 6-4 Landmark) comes to Baldwin Gymnasium for a 7 p.m. matchup.  The Royals handed Drew its only conference loss of the season, 84-73, on Jan. 24.
