Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Rangers Upended By Scranton On Thursday Night

MADISON, N.J. – In a contest that was delayed a day by weather, the Drew University men's basketball team suffered its first home loss since Nov. 29 on Thursday night.  The Rangers (16-6, 9-2 Landmark) saw their seven-game home winning streak come to an end, as Scranton (11-11, 7-4 Landmark) came away with a 77-65 victory at Baldwin Gymnasium.  Despite the loss, Drew maintained its hold on first place in the Landmark Conference.

The teams traded buckets early before Scranton went on a 5-0 run to open up a 14-9 advantage with 15:12 left in the first half.  Drew rallied to take the lead, 17-16, on a three-pointer by Dan Roibal (Middletown, N.J.) at the 13:15 mark, but the Royals countered with a trey on the other end.  Scranton never trailed again, extending the margin to 10 points, 46-36, at intermission.

After the Royals increased their lead to 12 points, 51-39, early in the second half, a Yonathan Napoleon (Los Angeles, Calif.) trey ignited a 10-2 run that brought the Rangers back within four, 53-49, with 13:05 remaining.  However, Scranton went on a 14-3 rally over the next six minutes to open up its largest advantage of the game, a 67-52 cushion, with 6:04 left.  Drew scored the next four points to pull within 11, but would get no closer, as the Royals notched a 77-65 win to complete a sweep of the season series.

Napoleon led the Rangers with 18 points, while Riley Collins (Lacey, N.J.) tallied 12 points, five assists and four steals.  Nate Aldrich (Franklinville, N.J.) finished with 10 points and eight rebounds to go along with two blocks.  Roibal, meanwhile, registered eight points and five assists.  Drew shot 42.9 percent (24-of-56) from the floor, 46.7 percent (7-of-15) from long range, and 62.5 percent (10-of-16) at the free throw line.

For the Royals, Kyle DeVerna posted a game-high 20 points, while Drew Schankweiler and Matthew Mancuso each recorded a double-double.  Schankweiler had 16 points and 16 rebounds, and Mancuso finished with 16 points and 11 boards.  Overall, Scranton held a 39-29 edge on the glass.  Kevin Doolan contributed nine points and eight assists for the Royals, who shot 47.3 percent (26-of-55) from the field.  Scranton was 7-for-17 (41.2 percent) from three-point land and 18-for-27 (66.7 percent) at the charity stripe.

Drew concludes its regular season home schedule on Saturday with a 2 p.m. matchup against Susquehanna (8-13, 5-6 Landmark).  The Rangers will honor their four graduating seniors prior to the contest.
