Second Half Surge Lifts Swarthmore Past Drew

MADISON, N.J. – The Drew University men's lacrosse team held a 5-2 halftime lead against Swarthmore at Ranger Stadium on Saturday afternoon.  However, the Garnet (5-1) scored five times in the third quarter to pull ahead en route to an 11-7 victory over the Rangers (1-5).

After Swarthmore opened the scoring, the Rangers rattled off five straight goals to take a 5-1 advantage.  Kyle MacDonnell (Niantic, Conn.) started the rally off a fee from Jack Crowley (Madison, N.J.) midway through the first quarter, and that combination connected again with 6:43 left in the second quarter to make it 5-1.  The Garnet got a goal with 97 seconds left in the half to cut the Rangers' cushion to 5-2 at intermission.

Swarthmore then outscored Drew 5-0 in the third quarter to go ahead 7-5.  MacDonnell scored twice early in the final period to even the score at 7-7, but the Garnet closed the game on a 4-0 run to earn an 11-7 victory.

MacDonnell finished with four goals and an assist, while Crowley had a goal and three assists.  Devin Lyons (Hackettstown, N.J.), meanwhile, registered a goal and an assist to go along with four ground balls.  Greg Swenson (East Lyme, Conn.) secured a team-best five ground balls, and Jonny Bronander (Glen Ridge, N.J.) tallied four ground balls.  Goalkeeper Nate Sanders (Annapolis, Md.) (1-5) made 16 saves, as Swarthmore outshot Drew 40-22.

Four different players scored twice for Swarthmore.  Jake Ross and Zander Levitz each tallied two goals and two assists, while Cam Marsh and Austin Chang both had two goals and an assist.  Ryan Izquierdo went 14-for-22 on faceoffs and picked up nine ground balls.  John Calia (5-1) finished with nine saves for the Garnet.

Drew (0-0 Landmark) will now have a week off before beginning its Landmark Conference schedule at Catholic (6-3, 0-0 Landmark) next Saturday at 1 p.m.
