Rangers Drop Landmark Opener at Catholic

WASHINGTON – The Drew University men's lacrosse team opened its Landmark Conference schedule at Catholic on Saturday afternoon.  The Rangers (1-6, 0-1 Landmark) held the lead after three quarters, but Catholic (7-3, 1-0 Landmark) scored three times in the final period to notch a 10-8 victory at Cardinal Stadium.

Drew led 3-1 midway through the first quarter, but Catholic responded with three straight goals, taking a 4-3 advantage on Owen Smith's tally just before the end of the period.  After the Cardinals extended their cushion to 6-3, Kyle MacDonnell (Niantic, Conn.) and Seamus O'Connor (Portsmouth, R.I.) found the back of the net to make it a 6-5 game.  Catholic's Samuel Montgomery scored a minute later, though, to put the Cardinals ahead 7-5 at intermission.

After goals by MacDonnell and O'Connor early in the third quarter tied the game, the Rangers went ahead 8-7 when MacDonnell scored with eight seconds left in the period.  Catholic's Bennett Bradley evened the contest with 12:42 remaining, then Mark Tocchio put the Cardinals in front a minute later.  Bradley added a late tally, as Catholic earned a 10-8 victory.

MacDonnell posted four goals for the Rangers, while O'Connor had two goals and an assist.  Kevin Goettlich (Florham Park, N.J.) also finished with three points after tallying a goal and two assists.  Joe Palmieri (Guilford, Conn.), meanwhile, picked up a team-best five ground balls.  Nate Sanders (Annapolis, Md.) (1-6) posted 14 saves in net.

Bradley paced the Cardinals with four goals, and he added an assist.  Montgomery registered two goals and two assists, while Massimo Germinaro had five ground balls, as Catholic held a 25-14 edge in that category.  Goalkeeper Alex Mulyk (7-3) made five saves.

On Wednesday, the Rangers visit FDU-Florham (2-2) at 7 p.m. for the annual "Battle of Madison."
