O’Connor Nets Game-Winner as Drew Takes “Battle of Madison”

MADISON, N.J. – Seamus O'Connor (Portsmouth, R.I.) scored the game-winner just before time expired, as the Drew University men's lacrosse team (2-6) posted a 10-9 triumph over local rival FDU-Florham (3-3) at Robert Shields Field on Wednesday night.  It was the Rangers' second straight victory in the annual "Battle of Madison."

The Rangers held an 8-3 lead with 9:34 remaining in the fourth quarter, but FDU-Florham went on a furious comeback, tying it at 9-9 with 39 seconds left.  Drew won the ensuing faceoff and Head Coach Doug Sage took timeout to set up a final play.  O'Connor then fired one into the back of the net as the final buzzer sounded, giving the Rangers the victory.

Drew led throughout, getting a pair of Kevin Goettlich (Florham Park, N.J.) goals in the first quarter before Kyle MacDonnell (Niantic, Conn.) made it 3-0 early in the second.  The Rangers held a 4-2 advantage at halftime, then started the second half on a 4-1 spurt to extend their cushion to 9-3.

Goettlich finished with four goals, while Jack Crowley (Madison, N.J.) scored three times in the contest.  In addition to his game-winning tally, O'Connor distributed four assists.  Greg Swenson (East Lyme, Conn.) picked up a team-best eight ground balls, and Joe Palmieiri (Guilford, Conn.) collected five ground balls to go along with 10 faceoff wins.  Nate Sanders (Annapolis, Md.) (2-6) earned the win after making eight saves.

For FDU-Florham, David Stewart led the way with four goals and an assist.  John Belanger added three goals, while Pat Stewart had two goals and an assist.  Will Kenny secured seven ground balls for the Devils, who held a 30-20 advantage in that category.  Goalkeeper Adam Reifer (2-3) posted eight saves.

After playing two straight on the road, the Rangers return home for five of their next six contests.  Drew welcomes Delaware Valley (2-6) to Ranger Stadium on Saturday for a 12 p.m. tilt.
